In a courageous act, “American Horror Story” star Cheyenne Jackson took to Instagram to share his recent struggle with addiction. The actor confessed that he has relapsed after almost a decade of sobriety. “VULNERABLE is what I’m feeling today,” he wrote in the caption of his lengthy Instagram post alongside a picture of himself in a car.
The 47-year-old revealed that he had been carrying the weight of his shame, saying, “After nearly a decade of sobriety, I fell off the wagon. I’ve been carrying a lot of shame. Scared to share it. But I know it can help someone, so here I go.”
He acknowledged that he didn’t want to “disappoint” those who saw him as a role model for living a sober lifestyle, so he had kept his issues buried within. “I took my eye off the ball. I stopped doing what I needed to keep myself on the path of my integrity,” he added.
The Actor Thought He ‘Had It All Handled’
In his emotional post, Jackson listed various things he could have blamed for his relapse, such as the passing of his “Call Me Kat” co-star, Leslie Jordan, who died last October of sudden cardiac dysfunction, and the current state of the world. “I could blame it on Covid. I could blame it on the state of the world—mass shootings. A nation divided. The death of my co-star,” he shared. However, Jackson admitted that he thought he “had it all handled” and acknowledged that he was a “work in progress.”
The actor then expressed gratitude towards actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who has been vocal about her addiction and sobriety, and thanked his support system. He ended his post with a message of hope for those struggling with addiction, writing, “If you are out there struggling, you are not alone, and there is a solution. I love you. And I love myself today, and that feels good to say. #progressnotperfection.”
Cheyenne Jackson Receives Love And Support For His Courage
Jackson’s brave admission received an outpouring of love and support from fellow stars. Some who commented on his post were Jamie Lee Curtis, Nyle Dimarco, Melissa Gilbert, Peta Murgatroyd, Lily Rabe, and Sophia Bush.
Curtis, who has been open about her addiction and sobriety, offered encouragement, writing, “WE ARE ONLY AS SICK AS OUR SECRETS! The truth is anyone in recovery only has this day sober. The past is irrelevant, and the future unknown.” She also shared a powerful poem by Kalidasa to inspire him.
Meanwhile, Jackson’s husband, Jason Landau, also shared a touching message, expressing his love and admiration for his partner. He commented, “Your power, truth, and willingness are why I fell in love with you. Today I love you even more.”
Jackson later posted a video thanking everyone who reached out to him, sharing that he had received over 2,000 personal messages, texts, and comments. He shared that he was overwhelmed by the response and expressed he “just felt so loved and so grateful.”

In March 2021, Jackson, in an interview with Page Six, discussed his sobriety journey. He revealed that he no longer craved alcohol, a significant milestone in his recovery.
The”Call Me Kat” actor also shared that he and his husband Landau, who he met in an AA meeting, have had moments where they thought about having a glass of wine. “Jason and I have had moments where we’re like, ‘If we had a glass of wine right now, nobody would blame us,” he shared.
However, he added that they realized they were better off without “alcohol” and invested their time and energy in other activities and passions. “It usually involves being with the kids, doing something to get your mind out of that. But yeah, I want relief,” Jackson told the news outlet.
