Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is opening up about the possibility of a Disney+ series based on the "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" video game.
The 2023 Star Wars Celebration event teased new footage of "Ahsoka," "The Acolyte," "Skeleton Crew," and the second season of "Andor." It also revealed that three new movies are in the works, including one starring Daisy Ridley.
However, it did not reveal if the highly anticipated "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" video game would get its own Disney+ series as many fans were hoping. Although Kennedy usually says "never say never," she did seem to shut down the possibility that the project may come to fruition any time soon.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Casts Doubt On 'Star Wars Jedi: Survivor' Disney+ Series
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy admitted that she has seen "a lot of chatter online" hoping for the possibility of a Disney+ series based on the hit video game.
Although Kennedy admitted that it "could be really interesting," she confessed, "It's not something that's front and center right at the moment, but what's interesting in the company that we do is that everybody across all these different lines of business, we all talk to one another."
"That often doesn't happen in situations like this, but because so many of the people at Lucasfilm are used to working together, we're very transparent about what the storytelling is that's going on — whether it's in the streaming space or the movie space, or books, animation games, whatever it is," she continued. "Eventually, it'll be some kind of immersive entertainment."
"There are many things we talk about just in terms of how we use technology with ILM inside the company," Kennedy explained. "So this constant cross-pollination of ideas to determine just exactly what stories move into the movie space, what stories move into the TV space — you never know, because the creative process is very similar in all of those different spaces."
"And so you don't have a crystal ball," she added. "You see what works, and then if it does, you draw from that."
It Seems Unlikely 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Will Get A Second Season
Reception to the six-episode Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was mixed, even with Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor reprising their roles from the prequel trilogy.
Although some are hoping for a second season, Kennedy seemed to cast doubt on the possibility that Obi-Wan Kenobi would star in his own show again but remained open to the idea that the character would appear elsewhere in the franchise.
"You know, I always hesitate to say, 'No, we won't do anything more with Obi-Wan Kenobi,'" Kennedy said. "Maybe what we end up doing is something that gets incorporated into some of the other stories we're doing, or eventually into a movie."
"Who knows? But right now it's still our standalone limited series, she added. "We have no plans for expansion right now."
The "Obi-Wan Kenobi" Disney+ series had originally planned as a full movie trilogy before it was later reduced to only six episodes.
When Kennedy was asked how Lucasfilm determines what gets turned into a movie and what becomes a Disney+ series, she replied, "I think your question is one of the most interesting ones facing many of us who are doing high end premiere television, because there are so many things we can do in streaming now where we do massive effects."
"We really increase the scale and size of these stories. And I certainly find myself personally looking at, well, what is that distinction that moves something onto the big screen versus the smaller screen?" she asked. "And it's usually the intimacy of the character-driven stories that you try to really push in the television space, and then the spectacle that you can still preserve in the movie space."
Kathleen Kennedy Talks The Animated 'Star Wars: Visions'
One thing that has captivated the small screen is the animated "Visions," which features a collaboration with animators from around the world.
"Visions is one of the most interesting initiatives we have right now because we're working with animation studios all around the world, and a lot of different talent — in addition to the amazing talent we have in house," Kennedy explained.
"What's interesting is all these different art forms really are merging in certain ways," she continued. "So there's a lot of what we do in special effects and things that we're doing in animation where there's a connection between the two, and what that may end up creating down the road could be really exciting and something we've never really seen before."
"It's another great thing about Lucasfilm because we have the technology piece inside of the creative community in our company," she added. "We're all working together to try to drive that."
Season 2 of "Visions" will premiere on Disney+ on May 4, 2023.
