Singer Taylor Swift and actor Joe Alwyn have reportedly called it quits after six years of dating.
Although rumors were swirling that the two became engaged last summer, it seems that the former couple has gone their separate ways as the "All Too Well" singer embarks on her The Eras Tour.
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Reportedly Call It Quits After Six Years Of Dating
On Saturday, April 8, the night before the Easter holiday, ET delivered some bad news for Swifties who supported the singer’s current relationship. Apparently, the “Love Story” singer and the “Conversations with Friends” actor called it quits “weeks ago,” according to a source familiar with their relationship.
An insider told the outlet that there was no drama and the split “was not dramatic,” adding that “the relationship had just run its course.” They also stated that the break-up is the reason that the British actor has not been spotted at any of Swift’s shows, despite showing up to several of her concerts in the past.
The news was confirmed by PEOPLE shortly after. A source previously told the magazine that Alwyn “is her rock. Their relationship is mature and wonderful,” adding that Swift had been “very happy” in their relationship.
The pair started dating in late 2016 and had been keeping their relationship private and out of the spotlight. In May 2017, a source told The Sun that the "Cardigan" singer had been using her private jet to fly to England to see him, adding, “her security has made it like a military-like mission to prevent her from being seen.”
In March 2018, the two went on a hike together in Malibu. A source told Page Six at the time that the former couple “seemed very intimate and deep in conversation – despite having her bodyguard trailing 20 feet behind them.”
Joe Alwyn 'Wouldn't Say' If He And Taylor Were Engaged
Later that same year, the “Stars at Noon” actor admitted to British Vogue that he was dating the "You Belong With Me" singer. “I’m aware people want to know about that side of things," he said at the time. "I think we have been successfully very private, and that has now sunk in for people … but I really prefer to talk about work.”
In 2020, Swift told singer Paul McCartney in an interview for Rolling Stone that their relationship gave her a sense of “normalcy” in her life.
“I think that in knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real-life and less like just a storyline to be commented on,” she said at the time.
“Whether that's deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture ... it's really just trying to find bits of normalcy,” she added.
In early 2022, rumors surfaced that the two had gotten engaged. Those rumors surfaced again in the summer of 2022. In May, the "Boy Erased" actor told WSJ Magazine that “If I had a pound for every time I think I've been told I've been engaged, then I'd have a lot of pound coins.”
He added that he “wouldn’t say” if he was engaged to the “Gorgeous” singer, adding, “I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn't say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn't say,” he told them.
“If you give it to them, it just opens the door,” Alwyn added.
Rumors Swirled That 'Only A Handful Of People' Knew About Their Engagement
In June 2022, The Sun reported that the couple was engaged, but had “only told” their inner circle about their engagement. This inner circle reportedly included only their immediate family and “trusted, very old friends.”
“Everyone has been sworn to secrecy, too,” the source added, noting that the “Shake It Off” singer only wore her “beautiful ring” in private.
“Again, only a handful of people know details about the wedding and Taylor hasn’t even told some of her team about the engagement,” the source alleged at the time.
“They want their love to stay away from the cameras as much as possible. This is just for them. And if and when they do exchange vows, there most definitely won’t be any Vogue, Rolling Stone, or Hello! magazines there,” the insider added. “It will be simple and elegant – like them.”
Taylor Swift Confirmed 'Lavender Haze' Was About Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn
However, it seems now that not only are the two not together, but they have already gone their separate ways. Swift recently released her tenth studio album, “Midnights,” and confirmed that the opening track “Lavender Haze” was inspired by their relationship.
"I happened on the phrase 'lavender haze' when I was watching Mad Men, and I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool, and it turns out that it's a common phrase used in the '50s where they would just describe being in love," she said in an Instagram video posted last October. "If you were in the lavender haze that meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow. I thought that was really beautiful."
"I guess, theoretically, when you're in the lavender haze you'll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud," she explained. "I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just 'public figures,' because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out that you're in love with somebody they're going to weigh in on it."
"Like my relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff and we just ignore it," she continued. "This song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff."
