"Succession" star Matthew Macfadyen ("Ripper Street," "Pride & Prejudice") is one of the latest actors to join the growing cast of Marvel's "Deadpool 3," per Deadline. Macfadyen will reportedly be playing the villain role opposite stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds.
Casting appears to be moving full steam ahead for the upcoming comic book superhero film.
Matthew Macfadyen Joins 'Deadpool 3' Cast In Villain Role
Macfadyen joins the cast opposite Emma Corrin ("The Crown"). His role in the film is currently unknown; other than that, he's playing the bad guy in the movie. THR notes that his character is said to be a "third wheel" of both Wolverine and Deadpool.
Macfadyen is best known as Tom Wambsgans, the husband of Shiv Roy, in the hit HBO series, "Succession." Last year, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on the show. He was previously nominated for the award in 2020 as well.
"Succession" is scheduled to end this year with its fourth and final season. Macfadyen is also working on a new Amazon Studios feature, "Holland, Michigan." He will star in the film opposite Nicole Kidman and Gael GarcĂa Bernal.
"Deadpool 3" is in the works for a fall 2024 release. Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum," "Free Guy") is directing the project, with writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese writing the script. They previously reported the first two films. Writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin wrote a previous draft of the film. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige produces the movie with Reynolds and Levy.
The film will see Jackman donning the adamantium claws once more as the brooding loner hero, Wolverine, despite his fate in 2017's acclaimed film "Logan." "Deadpool 3" is not expected to touch or affect the ending of "Logan," according to Reynolds and Jackman.
This will be the first installment of the "Deadpool" franchise produced by Marvel Studios. In contrast, the former 20th Century Fox (Now 20th Century Studios) made the previous two films before Disney acquired the studio and its assets. The threequel is still expected to have an R-rating similar to the first movie, while Marvel Studios and Disney have never produced an R-rated film. That said, "Deadpool 3," shooting for an R-rating with an edgier style back in 2016, was a big moment and triumph for the fans.
Plot details are also unknown in the film, other than the film will finally bring together Reynolds' Deadpool and Jackman's Wolverine onscreen together, not counting the events of 2009's greatly maligned "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which was Reynolds' first appearance on the big screen as an alter-ego. However, he became a much different version of Deadpool in the film, and fans were largely disappointed with the result. The character also had his mouth sewn shut, which was a disappointment as Deadpool is primarily known as a character for his eccentricities, snark, and dark sense of humor.
"Deadpool 3" is in theaters on November 8, 2024.
