The return of Liv Tyler to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been long overdue, and now it's finally happening. It's been nearly 15 years since Tyler last appeared as Betty Ross, the former lover of Bruce Banner (a.k.a. The Hulk), in 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Now, she makes her long-awaited return to the role in next year's "Captain America: New World Order," per The Hollywood Reporter.

The upcoming film will star Anthony Mackie, who previously assumed the mantle as Captain America in Disney+ and Marvel Studios miniseries, "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." Tyler's appearance is relevant as she is daughter of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who was previously portrayed by William Hurt in several installments of the MCU. The character will now be portrayed by Harrison Ford ("Star Wars," "Indiana Jones") in both "New World Order" and Marvel's other upcoming movie, "Thunderbolts."

"The Incredible Hulk" was only the second installment of the MCU back in 2008. The film was lukewarm with critics at the type and it underperformed at the box office, grossing only $134 million domestically and $264 million worldwide. Not to mention, there were a number of conflicts between Marvel Studios and star Edward Norton at the time of its release. No sequel was ever produced, and Norton was later recast in the MCU by Mark Ruffalo starting in 2012's "The Avengers." Ruffalo continues in the role to this day.

Another character from "The Incredible Hulk" who is set to appear in "New World Order" is actor Tim Blake Nelson, who reprises his role as Dr. Samuel Sterns. He's expected to finally assume his longtime role of Hulk's comic book archenemy, The Leader, in the upcoming film.

In another casting update, THR notes that Carl Lumbly will also be back in the film as the super-soldier Isaiah Bradley, last appearing in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." Danny Ramirez also reprises his role from the show as Joaquin Torres. They join the cast alongside Shira Haas, who will portray Sabra.

"The New World Order" is being directed by Julius Onah ("The Cloverfield Paradox"). It's currently shooting in Atlanta for a 2024 release. Onah is directing from a script by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. Spellman previously served as the show creator for "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier."

Tyler is known for her work in films such as "Armageddon" and "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, where she portrayed Arwen. More recently appeared in the FOX television drama, "9-1-1: Lone Star."

Interestingly enough, Betty Ross has a history in the Marvel comics becoming a Hulk variation called Red She-Hulk. With her father Thunderbolt Ross back in the fray, it begs the question if he will be appearing as Red Hulk, giving way to his daughter becoming Red She-Hulk. Not to mention, if they will come in contact with Bruce Banner again. The last audiences saw of Bruce Banner was in Marvel's "She-Hulk" series, where he appeared at a gathering with his extended family, revealing his biological son, Skaar.

"Captain America: New World Order" is due out May 4, 2024.
