Netflix's 'YOU' Returning For Fifth & Final Season
According to the show's creative team, executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, the show was "always conceived" for a "five-season journey." The series follows Penn Badgley as anti-hero Joe Goldberg.
The hit series is based on the novels by author Caroline Kepnes. Goldberg is a book-loving, hopeless romantic who has a penchant for stalking and killing women he claims he loves, along with anyone who gets in his way. Joe's search began in New York in the first season, before migrating to Los Angeles in Season 2. The suburbs of San Francisco followed this in Season 3 before he moved to London in Season 4.
In Season 4, Goldberg finally accepts that he's not a good person, a truth he had avoided for most of his life. At the end of Season 4, Goldberg returns to New York City with wealthy partner Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) and a new lease on life, which he's finally admitted is fundamentally immoral. This is said to be a new aspect that Badgley is looking forward to exploring in Season 5.
Speaking on the new show to Netflix's Tudum regarding Season 5, Badley commented, "I think it sets us up to actually have a really great finale season." The actor continued, "Can his inner monologue evolve some now? What does it mean for him to accept himself?"
Netflix has also confirmed that series creator and executive producer Sera Gamble is stepping down as showrunner for Season 5, as she will be focusing on the development of new projects. Michael Foley, a longtime writer on "YOU," and Justin W. Lo are being promoted to co-showrunner duties. Foley has been with the show since the first season, and Lo joined the series in Season 2.
Speaking on the transition away from showrunning, series creator Gamble commented, "As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix." Gamble continued, "Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgley. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion."
Fans will have to wait to see if Joe Goldberg will face judgment for his crimes until Season 5. Since its debut, the audience for "YOU" grew exponentially over its first three seasons. The fourth season has been on Netflix's Global Top 10 English TV chart for five weeks. It also reached the Top 10 chart for Netflix in 90 counties.
