The “Riverdale” star sat down with the talk show host on Friday and struggled to find words about the loss of Perry, who played Fred Andrews — KJ’s character Archie’s dad — on the hit CW series.
“It’s not every day you come across a guy like Luke,” he said. “Luke is the kind of person who did everything he can to make whoever you are, no matter how big or small you are, feel comfortable and feel welcome. It’s hard to kind of put into words how that makes me feel.”
Getting choked up at one point, KJ Apa described how Perry was family offscreen too.
“We had a really close relationship,” the star says. “He would call my parents every week and keep them updated on how I’m going. If I had a cold or something he’d be like, ‘I got him. I took some Gatorade to his apartment the other day.’”
He added, “He made such a huge effort from the very beginning. I wish I could be like that.”
As The Blast reported, Luke Perry was hospitalized in March after suffering a stroke. At the time, his “Riverdale” co-stars rallied around him praying for a quick recovery.
