Kate Winslet Reveals Why She Stepped Back From Hollywood After 'Titanic'

In 1997, the film "Titanic" made its debut on the big screens and the exceptional plot and acting made the film the highest-grossing movie at the time, with $2.2 billion in box office revenue.

The film won eleven academic awards and the lead actress Kate Winslet was nominated for best actress award for her iconic role as Rose DeWitt Bukater.

During a round table discussion with women such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Rashida Jones, and Vanessa Kirby for "LA Times," Winslet opened up about the sudden spotlight that followed after her role in "Titanic."

The actress disclosed that she felt inadequate at the time, as she was playing the role of an American for the first time and working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio intimidated her.

She explained that she was overwhelmed as she saw herself as "the overweight girl who would always be at the end of the line and wouldn't get to the door during auditions because time would be far spent before it was her turn."

During the discussion, Jones asked Winslet how she knew to avoid Hollywood's pressure and focus on more independent roles that have now solidified her career as a talented actress.

In a confessional, Winslet replied that she viewed the American movie industry as a big scary place where everyone had to be skinny and look a type of way to fit in.

She continued that knowing she didn’t fit in any of the above descriptions made her feel as though she was "not enough" and she would have to earn a place in the fast-rising industry to fit in.

The "Ammonite" star went on share her insecurities and assessed that she thought "Titanic" was "stroke of luck" and that, despite having two Academy Award nominations, she felt she could not dominate the show business.

However, becoming a mother at 25 changed her perspective and two years after her daughter was born, Winslet starred in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," which according to her, was a turning point in her career.

Having made her peace with being in the spotlight, Winslet is going bigger and better and recently teamed up with "Titanic" director, James Cameron for another blockbuster movie.

She also made an appearance in the 2009 sequel of the sci-fi film, Avatar. In November, Winslet trained and broke Tom's Cruise aquatic record of holding breath underwater in film a scene.

At this time, Winslet’s role in the fantasy sequel is unclear but her breath-holding record of seven minutes and fourteen seconds was announced on the film's official Twitter account. 

In a chat with "Fox News," Winslet admitted that it was a brilliant feat that was a result of four weeks of intensive training and she might not be able to recreate it again.

The photo of the record-breaking event went viral on Twitter but Winslet had no idea as she does not come on social media.
