Filmmaker Taika Waititi is looking to star in his own “Star Wars” movie set in a galaxy far, far away.
The “Thor: Love and Thunder” director has been known for his recent work behind the camera, but fans are curious to see what his own spin on the Lucasfilm franchise will look like.
Taika Waititi May Star In His Own ‘Star Wars’ Movie, Still In Development

This wouldn’t be the first time that director Taika Waititi has stepped in front of the camera to bring a role to life. He received critical acclaim for his role as a fictional Adolf Hitler in the 2019 Oscar-winning film “Jojo Rabbit.”
The news was first reported by Variety that Waititi “continues to work” on his “Star Wars” script and will “most likely have a part in it as well.” Right now, the future of Star Wars movies doesn’t look good, as Variety also reported that Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue One” and Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s rumored movie are also being axed.
Patty Jenkins And Kevin Feige’s Star Wars Movies No Longer Happening

Instead, Lucasfilm has been focusing on its Disney+ series after the success of “The Mandalorian,” following it up with “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Andor,” “Ahsoka,” “The Acolyte,” and “Skeleton Crew.”
Although presentations for several Disney+ series have been announced for the Star Wars Celebration in London this April, fans are hopeful that there will also be more news coming about future “Star Wars” movies as well.
Taika Waititi Is ‘Still Trying To Come Up With Ideas’ For His Star Wars Film

On May 4 2020, during the May the Fourth Be With You celebrations, Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi would co-write a new Star Wars movie alongside “Last Night in Soho” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
Unfortunately, little progress has been made on the film since that time. In July 2022, Waititi was asked by /Film how far along he’s gotten in completing the script.
“At the moment it’s just very early, because I … still haven’t even finished the script,” Waititi said at the time. “I’m still trying to come up with ideas and I’m mostly kind of in that part of the process where it’s still very kind of open.”
“And when I write, I kind of write every idea I’ve ever had and then start to kind of chisel it down into something,” he continued. “But I’m still throwing everything at the wall right now.”
Taika Waititi Says The ‘Star Wars’ Universe ‘Has To Expand’

In a separate interview with Total Film, Waititi revealed that he planned on expanding the galaxy far, far away with new characters that have never been seen before.
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,” Waititi said. “I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.'”
“That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story,” he went on.
Waititi Admits That He’s Still ‘Trying To Figure Out What The Story Is’

In yet another 2022 interview with The Wrap, Waititi replied “Not this year” when asked if he was still working on his “Star Wars” script.
“I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits’ and during that time I will still be writing,” he explained, adding, “I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”
In yet another interview with the New York Times, Waititi reiterated that he is still working on the script. However, even if it does get completed, he is unsure whether or not Lucasfilm will even approve the project.

“I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he explained. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”
According to Variety, the earliest a “Star Wars” film is scheduled to debut in theaters is in December 2025, which would be six years after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” wrapped up the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.
