Disney has been enjoying a winning streak for months now. With the announcement late last year that they would be releasing numerous new movies, TV series, and animated specials, long-time fans of Marvel, Star Wars, and the standard creations under the Disney brand have been waiting in eager anticipation for 2021.

Now that the new year has rung in, “Wanda Vision” was among the first new additions to DisneyPlus, and that was just one of many new live-action series’ set to premiere very soon.

Yet unexpectedly, the studio’s latest animated movie isn’t getting the response that was expected.

Lighthearted War?

The humor and style of the upcoming movie titled, “Raya & The Last Dragon” is seemingly something of an oxymoron based on the trailer that Disney released on their social media. Unlike other movie plots where a warrior seeks out a champion to fight for them and manages to recruit said champion, there is a major plot twist.

The “champion” is a dragon, and that dragon appears to be some kind of lesser mystical being. Although there is an assumed development for this character (there always is) many viewers are apparently unimpressed by the “pop-culture” style that this movie carries despite its war themes.

Fans Aren't Sold

Here are just some of the many comments that people have left on the announcement posts:

“Gonna be honest, chief, "How to train your dragon" did a lot of a better job with the whole dragon thing” (Commentator) “The dragon kinda doesn't fit the whole mood of the movie.. I dunno, it just barely looks like a dragon” (Commentator) “Not digging the design of the dragon...” (Commentator) “The dragon looks weird ? Since when are dragons hairy?” (Commentator) “Just seems like a bootleg Milan” (Commentator)

Not Properly Represented Ethnically?

Instagram @Disney

Disney shared a caption for their teaser post saying the following:

“Check out the brand-new poster for Raya and the Last Dragon. Experience the movie event in theaters or order it on @DisneyPlus with Premier Access March 5.”

And before the latest headlines confuse you, the majority of the cast are in fact Asian American! Whoever the moron was that wrote the now notorious tweet criticizing the film’s lack of proper Asian representation clearly didn’t look up the movie details, which are clearly listed on Wikipedia.

In Theaters Soon

Furthermore, the movie is going to premiere in movie theaters, not just on DisneyPlus. (Which was a criticism that many people had for the live-action version of “Mulan” when it exclusively released on Disney’s servers)

The release date was originally for November 2020, but it has been pushed back many times with the date now falling in March as mentioned before. It remains to be seen whether this will be a surprise blockbuster for an animated movie, or if it will be a flop.

Only time will tell, and reactions are poorly mixed online to say the least.
