It's the end of an era as it has been announced that the original "Angry Birds" game will soon leave the Google Play store. But why delete such an important game? Is it a similar situation to what happened with other popular apps? Let's find out.
Angry Birds In-Game Transactions
The first version of the 2009 game by Rovio, the game editor, is set to disappear from the Google Play store on the 23rd of February. But why? What is the reason behind the disappearance of such a famous game? Well, It's only because it's the favorite one of many, and that's because you only pay for the game and nothing else inside:
"We have reviewed the business case of Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, and due to the game’s impact on our wider games portfolio, we have decided that the game will be unlisted from the Google Play Store on Thursday, February 23. Additionally, the game will be renamed to Red’s First Flight in the App Store pending further review. Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will remain playable on devices on which the game has been downloaded, even after it has been unlisted.
We understand that this is sad news for many fans, as well as the team that has worked hard to make this game a reality. We are extremely grateful to the Angry Birds fans who have shown their love of the brand and this game from the beginning. We hope those fans can continue to bring that passion to our live Angry Birds slingshot games such as Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends, and Angry Birds Journey, where our goal every day is to craft the best possible experience for players".
So from what we understand, they're deleting the first version of the game because it is the comfiest for many players around the world. One of the reasons is the absence of ads on the app, you just pay for the game, and after you can play as long as you want with nothing stopping you, which is an advantage and something rare for a mobile game these days. Also, there are no in-game transactions so this means once the game is bought by the player, the studio doesn't earn money anymore, ever. While in other versions of the game like Angry Birds 2 and Angry Birds Friends, there are ads and it is possible to buy new things to progress in the game, so, the studio can continue to earn money once the game is downloaded. But in reality, what is the real problem of the franchise?
Not A Lot Of People Still Play Angry Birds
Now, let's be honest for a minute. Who is still playing Angry Birds? Yes, of course, many people, particularly kids, might still be playing it and nobody sees them in public. But among your friends, who still plays the game? Before, It was a game for the whole family, for teenagers, for everyone, so millions of people decided to download the app on the App Store or Google Play store. Also, it was one of the first few games to be qualitative while now, many franchises are on the App Store and Google Play store.
This game was one of the most popular games in the world. But today, while the studio still makes new games for the franchise, not as many people download them anymore, so that means the game is still alive thanks to ads and in-game transactions they put in new versions. Also, most gamers dislike a lot the fact that you have to pay for things inside a game once you buy it. Many games have been criticized because of that, and that's why people were still playing the old version. So is that a good move or the worst move of Rovio? Only time will tell.
