Following a long stint as the star of "Supernatural," Jared Padalecki is breathing some fresh air into his acting career with a critical role on "Walker," a modern-day reboot of "Walker, Texas Ranger."
The star's integral role in the dramatic re-imagining of the cult Chuck Norris classic is one that he is happy to have, as he detailed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, where, when asked about his participation in the program, he said, "I really enjoy it and I love the way it looks."
Different Styles
Padalecki explained that his role on "Walker" is a far departure from that of "Supernatural," contrasting them as intricately as their unique shooting styles.
"Our shooting style on 'Walker' is a little grittier, so if someone's not perfectly lit or they get covered up slightly in a take, we keep it," the actor recalled.
"It's a really quick-paced shooting style. It's taken some getting used to, but I really enjoy it and I love the way it looks. It looks very different from 'Supernatural,' which is neat because you don't want to just do the same exact thing. Otherwise, I would've stayed on 'Supernatural.'"
What Spurred Him To Take The Role
Padalecki said that when 'Supernatural' wrapped he was looking for some other way to spend his time, and found an interest in current situations regarding police in America.
"That's so interesting to me, I want to read more about this. I want to hear about who this person is and what drove somebody to go, 'I signed up to serve and protect, not to possibly endanger.'" They were bound by duty but also had their own moral code," he explained, which led him to take the role.
He Didn't Want To Act Anymore
Padalecki explained that although he wanted to take a break from acting after 'Supernatural' to focus on himself, he felt compelled to work on a project that was being chaired by his friend, Anna Fricke.
On a conversation with his manager Dan Spilo about working with Fricke, Padalecki recalled that "Dan said she probably had a deal somewhere, and sure enough we found out that 'Walker,' the property, was owned by CBS studios and that Anna had a deal with CBS. It was kismet."
On Transitioning Genres
Padalecki is quick to joke about how much of a departure his new role is from his past one, even referring to a specific conversation he and a team member had about the differences.
"I had a funny conversation the other day where someone was like, 'You're not really a rodeo guy, so how can you play a rodeo guy?' I was like, 'Listen, for 15 years I played a guy who hunted demons and who was Lucifer for a little bit, so I certainly have more experience doing rodeo-type things than hunting demons and vampires. I think we'll be all right,'" he jokingly referred to the ordeal, insinuating that he has transitioned well into his new position and to only expect good things moving forward.
