During her conversations with the press at the film festival, Sweeney spoke about her role in “Reality,” including her preparation process. The movie covers the real-life story of American whistleblower Reality Leigh Winner, who leaked classified documents about Russia meddling in the 2016 U.S. election to the press.
Sweeney played the role of Winner herself and shared that she extensively studied clips of Winner in several interviews to learn her speech and mannerisms. The actress said it was this visual research that helped her win the audition, and her conversations with Winner helped a lot after that.
She said per Deadline, “I had the honor and the privilege of being able to communicate with Reality. I was able to Zoom with her. Tina connected us, and I would text her throughout the process.” Later on, she added, “I was like, ‘Omg, this is a dream for an actor because I’m actually getting to speak with the real person and dive into their mind and what she’s gone through in her life.”
