The hugely successful franchise is back once again for a third film!
The heartwarming shenanigans of the Portokalos family will hit the big screen in the fall of 2023.
Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have production credits; not only did Wilson star in the film’s sequel and the 2003 TV spin-off of the series, but she is also set to produce the film alongside her husband and Gary Goetzman, according to Deadline.
Wilson expressed her excitement for the third film’s existence; “It’s thrilling to have Nia Vardalos, Academy-award nominated writer, not only in front of the camera as our star, but also behind the camera as our director, guiding our beloved cast for this third film shot on location in Greece. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” has brought audiences joy for 21 years. I’m so happy that more joy is on the way.”
Vardalos is celebrating her stint in the director’s chair and credits the sense of friendship that was cemented between the films’ producers and the cast.
“The sweet friendship which blossomed from producers’ first taking a chance on me then grew into a beautiful relationship as they entrusted me to direct this installment of our franchise. We filmed our family reunion entirely in Greece, which was thrilling for us all. Plus, we ate for free,” Vardalos joked.
Vardalos initially announced “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” in an Instagram video last summer, per Us Weekly.
“I have an announcement,” she told her followers. “So, we are in Greece filming ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’. Thank you so much for the lovely messages and waiting, I’m in a little room waiting to go down and film,” Vardalos revealed.
She also excitedly revealed she would be directing the film; “Guess who the director is? It’s me!”
Vardalos’ work did not go unseen by her co-stars in the first two films. The outlet also revealed actor and N’Sync’s Joey Fatone, spoke of his co-star’s work ethic.
While promoting the second film in 2015, Fatone said, “I think [Nia] did a really great job with really putting herself in there and kind of mixing things up and sitting back and taking 15 years to write the script. I think it paid off. I think it’s really good,” Fatone concluded.
