When one thinks of action movies in general, a certain stereotype of who is involved and what it will consist of can more often than not be conjured up in the mind. However, Jodie Turner-Smith is fervently challenging normal stereotypes around action film actors, and she is doing so with style and grace.
The 34-year-old star, for a January 2021 cover shoot with Elle, dove deep into the obstacles of being pregnant while filming, as well as touching on a variety of other subjects.
Different Situations
On her male co-stars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, Turner-Smith jokes that although they fit the common stereotype for action stars, neither could endure what she did while filming the same types of things they did.
“The men think they’re hard-core, but they could never do what they do while also making a baby,” she joked of being pregnant while filming, adding, “They just couldn’t.”
The trio star in the new project “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” together, and Turner-Smith made it known what she had to endure to bring her role in the project to life.
Wanting More Action
The film, which is slated to release on February 25, was such a delight for Turner-Smith that she claims her part in it has widened her perception and willingness to take on more action roles in the future.
“True strength is not found in force and brutality, but in vulnerability,” she explained of the harrowing endeavor, saying despite its difficulties it was something that she loved. “I would love to do more action, and action where I’m allowed to be a woman.”
Feeling Empowered
Although she has always been an outspokenly strong and independent individual in her own right, the lauded actress claims that the birth of her daughter allowed her to channel a level of gender-based empowerment inside her that she previously didn’t even know was possible.
“Patriarchal society really is out here, scamming women into thinking that they’re not supremely powerful beings,” she slammed society by saying, claiming that women hold a powerful position in life and society. “Because damn, it’s some goddess-level s***.”
Navigating Parenthood
Being a new mother is a difficult task in any right, but the trials and tribulations of the job have been bolstered by the societal circumstances coming as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and a shift in the world as a whole.
When it comes to this fact, Turner-Smith is candid in recognizing difficulties, adding, “Navigating parenthood at any time is difficult, and it’s even more difficult without support, when everything is shut down and you can’t really see other people or go anywhere.”
