Leslie Grace Defies Studio Claims, Dubs 'Batgirl' Film 'Incredible'

In a revealing interview, she spoke candidly about the unfortunate cancellation of the highly-anticipated "Batgirl" film and shared her thoughts on the studio's claims of its "unreleasable" status.

She also discussed the possibility of a return to the DC Universe and a touching moment she shared with a co-star. After a seven-month production in Scotland, the star received a memorable wrap gift from her on-screen nemesis, Brendan Fraser.

The gold necklace, which included a little bell and a pair of dice, came with a heartwarming card. As Grace recounts, "The card said a lot of really sweet things, but [Fraser] basically said, 'I give you this necklace because in this business you gotta have a little luck. So ring your bell and never stop.'"

She noted that the gesture meant a lot, adding, "It was just like, Whoa. And after all this, it's had so much meaning." However, the aftermath of the film's production was met with disappointment as Warner Bros. Discovery decided to cancel the project in August after the first test screenings did not meet expectations.

The decision to scrap the series, which was co-directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, was due to the debt-ridden studio's need to take a tax write-off. The film, which had already cost $90 million, would have required more money to be completed.

According to the 28-year-old, she was as much in the dark as the public was when it came to hearing about the cancellation. She found out about the news only when it was reported by the New York Post, and her phone was suddenly overwhelmed with messages. Recalling the moment, she said:

"I found out like the rest of you, and then my phone just started blowing up."

When asked how she felt after hearing the news, she recalled the moment with mixed emotions. "It was like deflating a balloon," she stated, adding that she felt confident in the magic they created.

Despite the disappointment, she remained optimistic about her experience on the film, noting, "Even though I would've loved to share that with the rest of the world, nothing can take that experience away from us."

Grace disclosed that Film Group CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca shared their limitations and the plans and budgets already in place before joining the team. The songwriter noted that from listening, she learned a lot about the movie-making process and realized that as an actress, she had very little control over certain aspects.

She also pointed out that they could not be specific about the creative aspect of the film or how it might affect the DC universe. Concerning the nature of the movie, Grace revealed that they had already begun to edit but had to stop, adding:

"but the film that I got to see — the scenes that were there — was incredible. There was definitely potential for a good film, in my opinion."

When asked if there was a chance she would appear in the "Batman" sequel, she admitted there had been conversations about that but could not confirm anything at that moment.

'In The Heights' Star Reminisces Canceled Role In 'Batgirl'

When Warner Bros. canceled the superhero movie starring Grace as the main character, alongside Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser, she went from shock to expressing gratitude towards fans and sharing unreleased content.

Last September, The Blast noted that the singer decided to share a behind-the-scenes video set to a song she wrote called "Batgirls Get Lonely Too." The TikTok started by showing her in the costume holding up a peace sign, followed by footage from the making of the movie.

The reel also showed her working out in the gym, in the makeup chair, getting ready and looking teary-eyed in what looked like a living room. She wrote in the caption:

"wrote this song during the pandemic.. b4 I even knew ANY of this would be my life ??‍♀️?#batgirlsgetlonelytoo #badgirlsgetlonelytoo."
