In 2015 before her divorce, Barrymore talked to PEOPLE about watching her then husband with their girls. "Honestly, I don't know how it is for other couples but really I like watching him be a father. I know everyone says you're supposed to put your coupledom first. But I really love it being all about the kids," she said. "Maybe that's my compensating for not having parents myself or a childhood but right now, the focus is about how we're figuring things out as parents."

Barrymore, 47, told Parents magazine in early 2022 that it's nice to split the kids time between her and Kopelman because, "both parents get a day off," but the downside to co-parenting is that "you miss them when you're apart because that wasn't the plan."

Last month, Barrymore talked about the importance of positive co-parenting on her show with guest Kate Hudson, who also co-parents with her exes. "I am co-parenting with someone. And although we might not be married anymore, and he's even married with his beautiful new wife, Allie, our wonderful stepmother, we're in a daily engagement and our relationship has never been better," Barrymore said. "We should champion our exes, and you don't have to be best friends, especially if they have a new person in their life."
