Schnapp previously came out as gay on the social media platform last month. He shared the news with his fans in a short clip of him lip-syncing to an audio, with the words, "You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious."

Written across the video was a statement that read, "When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was 'we know.'"

He also captioned the video, "I guess I'm more similar to Will than I thought." Schnapp's caption referenced how he shared similar sexuality with his "Stranger Things" character. The actor had earlier confirmed that his character was gay during an interview with Variety in July 2022.

At the time, he told the publication that Will's sexuality had been hinted at in the series since the first installment. However, it became more apparent after he coyly professed his love for Mike (Wolfhard) in Season Four, Episode Eight of "Stranger Things," "Papa."

"Obviously, it was hinted at in Season 1: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends?" Schnapp said in the interview, per Insider.

The actor then reiterated that Will's feelings for Mike were real, just like his sexuality, and it was all part of the showrunners' plans to portray the character in that manner.

He added, "Now that he's gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it's 100% clear that he is gay, and he does love Mike."
