Despite his death in June 2009, Michael Jackson still dominates pop culture. As previously reported by The Blast, his estate is reportedly selling half of its interest in the late musician’s catalog for $800 million to $900 million.

Although the terms of the detail have yet to be finalized, Variety reported that Sony and a financial partner are working on a detail to acquire fifty percent of the estate’s interests in the “Thriller” singer’s collection.

The deal reportedly includes “publishing, recorded-music revenues, the ‘MJ: The Musical’ Broadway show and the upcoming biopic ‘Michael.'” Sony is no stranger to big-budget deals and has recently acquired Bruce Springsteen’s publishing and recorded-music catalogs for approximately $600 million.

Sources also revealed that Sony paid somewhere between $150 million to $200 million for Bob Dylan’s rights to his recorded-music catalog. There is no word as of yet as to who the financial partner might be, although Eldridge Industries and Shamrock have been floated as possibilities.

Throughout his solo career and in his final years with the Jackson 5, Sony and CBS were the exclusive home for the “Beat It” singer’s recorded music collection. After his death at age 50, longtime lawyer John Branca and co-executor John McClain took control of the estate.

Both Branca and McClain have yet to comment on the profitable sale. The “Smooth Criminal” singer’s music catalog remains to be one of the most profitable in history. His 1982 album “Thriller” is still one of the top best-selling albums of all time. “Thriller” also holds the distinction of being the first album to be certified platinum thirty times.
