Olivia Rodrigo FINALLY Crossed Paths With This New Wave Legend!

Olivia Rodrigo has finally crossed paths with a certain New Wave legend who frequently came up in conversations related to Rodrigo in 2021. It's no longer 'brutal' out here!

Rodrigo captured hearts and helped unleash the inner-angsty teens living within music listeners with her debut album "Sour" upon its release almost two years ago. The now-19-year-old poured her feelings into the heartbreaking anthem "Driver's License" and memorably asked her ex if he felt 'deja vu' with his new girlfriend in the song of the same name.

Rodrigo also declared she wanted to get 'messy' in the anthemic track "Brutal," asking where her effing 'teenage dream' was.

"Sour''s opening track kicked off Rodrigo's first LP with a bang and its fast-paced and frantic nature never slowed down, much like the mood of another brash banger from the late seventies; Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up."

Costello, whose famous cuts include "Watching The Detectives," "Every Day I Write The Book," and the heartbreaking "Alison" to name a few, rose to fame in the late seventies not only because of his familiar moniker but for his punk-tinged and uptempo tunes.

One of Costello's best-known tunes "Pump It Up" was released in 1978 on his sophomore album "Pump It Up." The bass-fueled banger has long been said to sound similar to Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues."

The subject of "Pump It Up" sounding similar would once again surface in music circles upon "Brutal''s release in 2021. In fact, the idea of Rodrigo's tunes sounding just like other notable songs wasn't new; Paramore were later retroactively given songwriting credits on Rodrigo's "good 4 u" following comparisons to "Misery Business."

Discussions on similarities between "Brutal" and "Pump It Up" began to circulate on social media, to which Costello soon shut down not-so-brutally.

Responding to a Twitter discussion about the songs' similarities, Costello told the original poster, "This is fine by me" per the BBC.

"It's how rock and roll works. You take a broken piece of another thrill and make a brand-new toy. That's what I did," he added.

Costello later expanded on his thoughts in an interview with Vulture last year.

"I don't often get involved with dialogue online, but this sort of took me by surprise," he told the outlet, and would later add, "For me to take issue with Olivia Rodrigo floating some lines over a rhythm which is shared in a whole bunch of songs before and since would just be idiotic."

A fan would mash up the two tracks and post their creation to YouTube. Costello would endorse the track by later sharing it on Twitter.

More than a year after the "Pump It Up" controversy, Costello would share a photo of himself and Rodrigo together on his social media accounts.

"Great to finally meet @oliviarodrigo," Costello proclaimed in the photo's caption.

In the Twitter thread where Costello shared the photo, a fan wrote, "Your tweet about her song, Brutal, made me check out the song, which made me buy her album, which I love."

"I thought you handled those plagiarism accusations about her so well," another fan tweeted. "Classy and secure in your own legendary talent. What's so funny bout peace, love, and understanding indeed!"

"please work together," another fan tweeted.

"you are literally king," another proclaimed.

"Love this, sir, and even more respect to you for the share," an admirer tweeted.

Costello's latest LP, "The Boy Named If," recently celebrated its one-year anniversary with a Best Rock Album Grammy nomination at the 2023 ceremony.
