Kim Cattrall Talks Avoiding Pregnancy While Filming 'Sex and the City'

Years on from her star acting role, Kim Cattrall is reflecting on her conscious choice to avoid pregnancy at all costs while filming "Sex and the City."

During a new revealing interview on the "Women's Prize for Fiction" podcast, Cattrall opened up about why she reached the decision to put her career on the small screen first and foremost over being a mother at the time, as well as the implications having kids would've had on her relationship at the time.

"Well the only way I could have done it just physically was if I became, at that time, this was 1998, I would have to become a bit of a science experiment," Cattrall told podcast hosts during their very open chat about the major life decision. 

The actress added that scheduling difficulties played a role as well, "My partner and I would have to be available to have sex at a certain time. There's just no way I could have done that in a healthy, emotional or even physical state and do 19-hour days."

Ultimately, Cattrall was enthralled more by work at the time.

"I was also 41. I just thought that I have to make a decision here for my well-being," she said of what else contributed to her decision. "And I love to work. My work has been my passport to my independence and my freedom and my education."

She was a mainstay in one of the hottest programs of the turn of the century, starring in "Sex and the City" from 1998 until 2004, and then in two subsequent series-to-screen film spinoffs.

Cattrall was candid to admit that "Sex and the City" happened at a very different time for the television industry and that she feels blessed to have taken part in it. Despite age affecting the roles she casts now, the star is hopeful for more age-appropriate roles in the near future.

"My roles were being taken over by younger and younger women," she explained. "So that was the system and still is to a great degree. But the great thing is that women now are writing great parts for women, and they're in their 60s."

Cattrall may have loved her time on "Sex and the City," but the actress is also quick to admit that at points being a part of the program became "all encompassing," especially when it really reached critical mass and the stars had to take on promotional roles in everything they did aside from their normally scheduled acting time.

"It was a lot of fun and I loved it," she said of the time, but doubled down on why it all culminated in her not wishing to be pregnant back then. "Taking it on just took a lot and I just thought I can't do both."
