Lil Baby is regarded today as arguably the hottest rapper in hip-hop, especially with the 2020 that he had. On Thursday night, the Quality Control Music artist also took home the Artist Of The Year award at the second-annual Apple Music Awards.
A performance was also included on a YouTube stream. In addition to this award, a documentary is about to be released about Baby's career. Here, he explains his ups and downs in life along with how he originally didn't want to have a music career.
Lil Baby Says Music Wasn't On His Mind After Going To Jail At 13
In this documentary, the Atlanta native discussed going to jail for the first time at 13-years-old. Following his release, music was the furthest thing from his mind.
"I went to jail my first time at thirteen," said Lil Baby in the trailer for the documentary. "I dropped out of school somewhere between ninth and tenth grade. I never wanted to be a rapper."
Baby added that he was already getting money in the streets, so he didn't need music. After going to jail again though, that's when things changed.
Baby Began To Start Rapping After Next Stint In Jail
"I was already young and turnt in the streets. After I got locked up again, my perspective changed. I became an artist with something to say, people to stand for, and now it's finally time to tell my story."
Baby ended up being released in 2016. In 2017, that's when he saw his breakthrough as his "My Dawg" single blew up that summer. He also released his "Harder Than Hard" mixtape. At that point, he already began to receive notoriety in his neighborhood and in Atlanta overall.
Baby Scored First No. 1 Album With 'My Turn' In 2020
Almost 10 months ago, Baby elevated himself to superstar status with the release of his second album, "My Turn." This project was led by the hit singles "Woah" and "Sum 2 Prove." It went on to debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and is at 2x platinum status in the US.
The deluxe edition that was released in May included another hit in "We Paid" feat. 42 Dugg. Baby soon followed up the success of My Turn with his "The Bigger Picture" single in June. This discussed the political climate in the US where there was nationwide protests in the aftermath of the killing of unarmed Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis, MN.
Baby Is Nominated For Two Awards At 2021 GRAMMYs
At the end of November, it was also announced by the GRAMMYs that Baby is nominated for two awards. The ceremony will take place next month in Los Angeles. The categories that Baby is in are Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. The Bigger Picture is nominated for both of them.
Many fans expect Baby to take home at least one of these awards. A big surprise though is that My Turn isn't in the Best Rap Album or Best Album categories, considering how big of a year it had, as it generated over $19 million.
