Andrea Riseborough To Keep Oscar Nom, Campaign Tactics Will Be Addressed By Academy

January no doubt ended with the best news for Andrea Riseborough as she gets to keep her Oscar nomination for her performance in "To Leslie" despite chatter about her suitability.

As recent reports showed, the Academy reviewed the awards' campaign procedures to authenticate and determine the fairness of Riseborough's nomination. 

All in all, things seemed to have worked out in her favor, excluding a few online campaign tactics that raised concern, promising to be addressed by the Academy.

Following a January 27 announcement from The Academy about conducting a review of their rules for social media campaigning, it was confirmed that Riseborough's nomination would not be withdrawn.

The news was revealed on Tuesday, January 31, implying that the "Made in Dagenham" actress will remain one of the honorees in the Best Actress category of the Oscars.

Per PEOPLE, the Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement, "Based on concerns that surfaced last week around the "To Leslie" awards campaign, the Academy began a review into the film's campaigning tactics. 

Kramer continued, "The Academy has determined the activity in question did not rise to the level that the film's nomination should be rescinded." However, he noted that while the movie star remains a nominee, some social media campaign approaches for "To Leslie" drew their attention.

"We did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern," he stated. "These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly."

Kramer believed the review made it "apparent" that parts of the Academy rules must be spelled out to ensure a "better framework for respectful, inclusive, and unbiased campaigning." The inferred changes are set to be made after this year's awards cycle and will be shared with the members of The Academy as revealed in the CEO's release.

Concluding his statement, Kramer stressed that The Academy "strives to create an environment where votes are solely on the artistic and technical merits of the eligible films and achievements." In the Best Actress category, Riseborough was nominated alongside "Tár's" Cate Blanchett, "Blonde's" Ana de Armas, "The Fablemans'" Michelle Williams, and "Everything Everywhere All at Once's" Michelle Yeoh.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that before the Oscars nominations announcement, the majority of Oscars experts did not include her as a top dog for a nomination as she has only earned an Independent Spirits Award nomination. However, it was reported that thanks to a last-minute campaign from Hollywood icons like Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Sarah Paulson, and Edward Norton, the "Never Let Me Go" actress' chances increased during voting.

Additionally, there was no specific mention of Riseborough in the Academy's release regarding the review of campaign procedures; however, it elaborated on its goal to ensure a "fair and ethical" awards competition. The statement further included, "We are reviewing the campaign's procedures around this year's nominees to ensure no guidelines were violated. And to inform us whether changes t the guidelines may be needed." 

Given the Academy's decision to take review actions, some stars were not thrilled. One such person was the "Yellowjackets" actress Christina Ricci, who ranted in a since-deleted Instagram post.

The 42-year-old began, "Seems hilarious that the 'surprise nomination' (meaning tons of money wasn't spent to position this actress) of a legitimately brilliant performance is being met with an investigation." She then questioned whether only the "films and actors" that could afford campaigns deserved recognition which she believed was "elitist and exclusive, and frankly, very backward."

Ricci maintained that Riseborough possibly had nothing to do with the campaigning, but her nomination will still end up blemished by the Academy's actions. She added, "And if it's taken away, shame on them."  

PEOPLE reported another A-lister is supporting Riseborough amid the Oscars review of her nomination. Marc Maron, her "To Leslie" co-star, spoke out on a recent episode of his "WTF" podcast.

Maron slammed the Academy for investigating the 41-year-old actress' nomination because they felt their system was threatened to the extent that they were "completely bought out by corporate interests in the form of studio."

He credited Riseborough's feat to a grassroots campaign, boosted by a number of actors, while claiming that the review was done since the Academy felt that independent artists were unworthy of their attention unless they saw how it was achieved.

At the time, the 59-year-old maintained that Riseborough's nomination would not be rescinded as the campaign was genuine and the "Birdman" actress was "not undeserving."
