On March 4, 2020, Mickey and Minnie’s Runway Railway — the first ever Mickey Mouse-themed attraction — opened at Walt Disney World.
When The Walt Disney Company first announced the new attraction, they said Disneyland in California would also receive a version of the new ride — and now, nearly three years after the ride opened at Walt Disney World in Florida, Guests visiting the West Coast can now experience their version as Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Disneyland officially opened today!
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Opens at Disneyland
Nearly three years after Walt Disney World’s version of the ride opened to Guests, those visiting Disneyland today, Friday, January 27, 2023 can be one of the first to experience Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland as today is opening day!
Guests will first enter the El CapiTOON Theater as they are invited to the grand world “prem-ear” of Mickey and Minnie’s latest cartoon short, “Perfect Picnic.” The ride then takes Guests into the cartoon world as they hop aboard a steam train, conducted by Engineer Goofy.
According to Disney, the ride is described as “Step into the whimsical universe of a Mickey Mouse short and hitch a ride on Engineer Goofy’s train. What could possibly go wrong? Cue hilarious hijinks! A relaxing train ride suddenly turns into a zany, free-ranging romp through ever-changing and rearranging cartoon scenes. You’ll quickly learn that anything can happen in this out-of-control animated world.”
“But don’t worry, with friends like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, you’re bound to get back on track. All aboard!,” the website’s description concludes.
How To Experience Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
If Guests want to experience this attraction, they must use the Disneyland app to grab a Virtual Queue as a StandBy line is not currently offered.
According to Disney, “boarding groups for a virtual queue are limited, subject to availability and are not guaranteed. Not all boarding groups may be called to return, based on the availability of the experience. View important information about the virtual queue.”
Guests also have to option to purchase individual Lightning Lane entry for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Disney states, “Lightning Lane entry purchases are limited in availability, are subject to change or closure, may vary by date and are not guaranteed.”
Disney Cast Members Speak Out On Debut
Thanks to a bit of Disney magic, Imagineers were able to make the dream of this ride become a reality after nearly six years — and the best reward will be seeing Guests enjoy the ride.
“To see it with guests here and get to show it off for everybody, and show how proud we are – it’s just an amazing moment for us,” Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz, the executive producer of the attraction and executive portfolio producer for the Disneyland Resort for Imagineering, told ABC.
Jennifer Schwartz, the lead concept designer for the attraction, also spoke out, saying, “This fits into Mickey’s story. It’s really cute; it’s zany. They get to go on their perfect picnic together, but of course, mayhem ensues when Pluto gets stuck in the car, and then they hit a bump and voila.”
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is located inside ToonTown at Disneyland in California. A sister attraction is also located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Florida.
