During the latest episode of Trainor's podcast, the topic of getting sober joined the chat. Sabara, 30, explained how therapy helped him during his "sober journey."

"Therapy is great, highly recommend it, really helpful for my sober journey because it's figuring out your triggers," he said. "Figuring out that being alone is kind of a trigger for me. I know now that when I'm alone to be ready for the little b****** inside my head to be like, 'Hey buddy, it's just us now. What are we going to do?'"

"The Weed For Me Was A Coping Mechanism"

In addition to getting sober from alcohol, Sabara also gave up weed, which he said was a little more difficult because there were no "repercussions from weed" and there was never a bad experience. He decided to give up weed because of advice his therapist gave him.

"One piece of advice that my therapist gave me that was so helpful was she just said, 'If you want to be on your A-game maybe consider full sobriety,'" he explained. "Of course, I want to be on my A-game. She was like, 'You'd be surprised a lot of people don't.' But that really sparked something in me to go, you know what, even though weed is not necessarily bad for me right now, I don't have to keep testing it out to wait for it to get bad or to get in a bad spot so let's just try this whole sobriety thing."

The conversation continued talking about weed and why Sabara would turn to it. "For me it was really accessing, I guess I'd say, childhood trauma," he said. "The weed for me was a coping mechanism, was like, a hug, a reassurance, it's okay. I would regulate with weed."

After Trainor shared an early story of catching Sabara smoking when they were dating, the actor told his wife, "you make me a better person."
