Netflix hasn't revealed a debut period for the new season, but Season 5 debuted on the streamer last September. The show was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. It continues the film franchise "The Karate Kid," picking up events decades later, following the original film's stars Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) after they've become much older and have had kids of their own.
The show creators are calling the next season "the biggest season of 'Cobra Kai' yet." In an official announcement from Netflix, they stated, that the announcement will serve as a "celebration of all that's come, as well as all that's still left to be told."
Over the course of the show, LaRusso and Lawrence have now formed an unlikely alliance to face off against the Cobra Kai dojo and faced off against Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). In Season 5, the previous Cobra Kai dojo sensei, John Kreese (Martin Kove), also managed to escape from prison.
The show originally debuted on YouTube's premium subscription service, YouTube Red, which later became YouTube Premium. After its second season, the show moved to Netflix for its third through fifth seasons. And now, the show will conclude with its final season on the streamer.
In a letter to the fans in the Netflix announcement, the creators spoke about the "bittersweet" decision to make Season 6 the final one and ending the show on their terms.
As previously reported by The Blast, Sony Pictures announced an untitled new "Karate Kid" movie for a June 7, 2024 theatrical release. No other details on the film were revealed, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that it's expected to be "the return of the original ‘Karate Kid’ franchise." What exactly that means remains to be seen. It hasn't been announced if this new film is meant to be connected to "Cobra Kai" or something completely brand new.
Sony Pictures previously reported the film franchise in 2010 with Jaden Smith as the Karate Kid and Jackie Chan as his mentor. The film was a smash hit, grossing $176 million domestically and $359 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. Despite its success, the film never received any sequels or follow-ups.
It would take until 2018 for "The Karate Kid" franchise to finally be dusted off again with "Cobra Kai," which became a breakout success. The show also stars Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz, Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keene, Jacob Bertrand as Eli Moskowitz, Peyton List as Tory Nicholas, Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, Gianni DeCenzo as Demetri, and Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso.
Season 6 of "Cobra Kai" will debut on Netflix later on. The first five seasons are available to view now on the streaming service.
