Sarah Michelle Gellar was accused of being mean to people behind the scenes on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Seth Green is coming to her defense.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Was A Tough Set
There is no question that the cast and crew of the show believed that the working conditions on the set of the WB show from its beginning in 1997 to its ending in 2003 were pretty rough. People like the executive director Joss Whedon were accused of misconduct.
Whedon admitted himself that he acted "not mannerly" toward star Charisma Carpenter who played Cordelia, the high school pretty girl. Some even accused Gellar of being mean and acting badly on set.
Apparently, this isn’t true at all, if anything Gellar helped the actors and production staff have better working conditions according to Seth Green who played werewolf Oz. The Family Guy actor recalls Gellar being called a “bitch” regularly because she would speak up when production would go too long or things weren’t right on set.
‘The Show Was Just Hard’ Claims Seth Green
Green believes that overall, the show was challenging to film. "That show was just hard. We were working crazy hours, and a lot of things that got pushed weren't necessarily safe or under the best conditions.”
This is what Sarah fought hard against. “Sarah was always the first one to say, 'We agreed this was a 13-hour day and it's hour 15 — we've got to wrap,' or, 'Hey, this shot doesn't seem safe,' when nobody else would stick up for the cast and crew,'" shared Green with The Hollywood Reporter. "I saw her get called a bitch, a diva, all these things that she's not — just because she was taking the mantle of saying and doing the right thing."
Sarah Michelle Gellar Commented On The Backlash
The actress has had this conversation before when she spoke to the The Hollywood Reporter, she defended her right to be strong and confront the problems on set. "If people think you're a bitch, it's almost better, there's less expectation that way."
Gellar elaborated on her reputation of being hard to work with. "There was a time when I had a reputation of being ... 'difficult,'" said Gellar. "Anyone that knows me knows it came from the fact that I always put in 100 percent. I never understood people who don't. I've mellowed a bit in [my expectations of others] — I think because I got burned out,” she admitted.
Freddie Prinze Jr. Came To His Wife's Defense
Gellar’s husband also spoke up for his wife who has a complicated relationship with Whedon and it bled into the set and cast.
"She had to deal with a lot of bulls--- on that show for all seven years it was on. The stuff they pressed upon her, without any credit or real salary, while she was often the only one doing 15-hour days," he said, "yet she was still able to get the message of that character out every single week and do it with pride and do it professionally."
Gellar and others have referred to the set of the show as toxic but one thing is for sure, Gellar was not the one making people uncomfortable on set and it’s not only Green who came to her defense, in Evan Ross Katz's "Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts," many other cast members shared what a joy it was to work with the very “professional” actress.
