Chelsea Handler shared some startling information! According to the comedienne, she only realized that the sun is not the same as the moon at age 40.
During her appearance on “The Tonight Show,” she confessed that her earlier belief was that “when the sun went down, it popped back up as the moon.”
The comedian also revealed she learned her idea was wrong during a trip to Africa alongside her older sister Simone.

‘It Was Shocking To Me’
During her appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” the comedian made a shocking revelation that revealed she wasn’t particularly good in astronomy, per E! News.
Handler shared with Fallon that she only realized that the “sun and the moon” were different planetary bodies at age 40.
Before that, she believed they were “the same thing” and had spent years living with the false information. It also appears that she had thought everyone shared the same belief about the sun and moon being one body.
Shocked by her statement, Fallon shared his disbelief, saying, “I found this hard to believe, what are you talking about?”
Handler responded that getting to know she was wrong was also quite a shocking moment for her at the time. “It was shocking to me, as well,” she responded to Fallon’s remark.
Chelsea Handler Thought The Moon ‘Popped Back Up’ As The Sun
Handler said she learned she was wrong during a trip to Africa alongside her older sister Simone.
“We were on safari,” she told her host. “And my older sister, Simone, looked up at the sky, and she said, ‘Chelsea, Chelsea, look up. It’s not often you get to see the sun and the moon at the same time,” adding that she replied to her sister, saying, “But they’re always together.”
Her response stunned Simone and spurred her to seek clarification on what Handler meant. However, Handler “tried to gloss over it,” but her sister wasn’t going to take no for an answer and pressed for a reply.
“She said, “‘No. I need you to tell me what you think is happening between the sun and the moon,'” Handler recalled her sister. “And I was like, ‘Honestly, I just assumed when the sun went down, it popped back up as the moon.”
Chelsea Handler On Hosting Critics Choice Awards
Handler hosted the 2023 Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 15 and prior to the event, she shared that it will be a “different vibe” than her live stand-up shows.
She told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’ll be a different vibe, for sure, but I try to take everything that I say yes to pretty seriously these days, and I want to be respectful of all the people who’ve worked so hard to be in this business and to receive nominations and make it a really fun, high-energy night.”
She revealed that the recent criticism that award shows have garnered in recent years made her feel slightly pressured about hosting the ceremony. However, the comedienne said she would tap into the pressure to “fuel her performance” and “spread good vibes” to the attendees.
She noted, “My intention is just to have a great time and to make everybody feel comfortable and welcome — like they belong there.”
Chelsea Handler ‘Hated Men’ Before Dating Her Ex Jo Koy
Earlier in the week, Handler opened up on “The View” about how her former relationship with fellow comedian Koy helped change her perspective about men.
“I hated men before I got together with my ex, and he kind of renewed my faith in men because he was such a sweetheart,” she said on the daytime show, per Hollywood Life. “I had never been in a relationship with so much togetherness. I thought that would be annoying, in my face all the time. I’m very independent.”
For subsequent relationships, the comedian shared that she has no plan to get pregnant and have kids. “I’ve had the opportunity to care through with a pregnancy, and I’ve rejected that idea,” said Handler on the show.
