Tom Hanks Says Working With Son Truman Was 'Special'

Hanks' recent movie collaboration saw the actor star alongside his 27-year-old son Truman. The movie, "A Man Called Otto," is set to be released on January 13 and is an adaptation of "A Man Called Ove," released by Fredrick Backman in 2012.

Hanks played the titular role, while his son Truman played the character's younger self. In a Monday interview with People Magazine, Tom shed light on how it felt working with the young actor and how he could perform regardless of their relationship.

"Without a doubt, it's special because, you know, I changed his diapers," the Academy award-winning actor said. "But you get past that right away because you gotta show up, and you gotta hit the marks, and you gotta do it on time, and you gotta be right there."

Hanks further stated that the main reason for the casting was Truman's resemblance to him, and the 27-year-old recognized how much pressure the role brought. "I know what that takes, and he does too. It's a little different when it's the whole shebang," the actor said.

He continued, "He was cast for a very specific reason. We resemble each other, he's not a stranger, and he knows what the pressure is, and he's gotta do it."

Further on, Banks shed light on some hard truths as an actor and how he was still uncertain about his performance in the film until its release. "The thing that we both know is ... you don't know if you did a good job," the star said.

Truman, on his end, discussed his experience on set with Hanks and how he was able to nail his performance. The 27-year-old revealed that over the past few years, he, along with Hanks' other children, have practiced and mastered the art of imitating their father.

Truman explained, "Whenever I do my imitation of him, people are like, 'That's not what he sounds like.' But I have to convey to you the way I hear him. Everyone else hears, 'Houston, we have a problem'; I hear this grumpy old man who's mad at the DVD player."

Besides "A Man Called Otto," Truman has starred in several other titles such as "Black Widow," "News of the World," "Wrath of Man," and others.

Tom Hanks Says Acting Is 'A Family Business'

In response to the topic of Hollywood nepotism which was a subject of many discussions towards the end of 2022, Hanks called acting a "family business." While talking to Reuters via The Sun, the actor said, "This is what we've been doing forever. It's what all of our kids grew up in. We have four kids — they're all very creative, they're all involved in some brand of storytelling."

Hanks continued, "And if we were a plumbing-supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year."

The "Forrest Gump" actor, however, asserted that regardless of what a person's last name is, they had to put in the required work to be successful.
