Netflix Opts To Cancel 'Inside Job' Despite Early Renewal

The second half of "Inside Job's first season recently debuted in November on the streaming service. The show is also co-executive produced by "Gravity Falls" creator Alex Hirsch.

Speaking on the news, Takeuchi wrote on social media, "I’m heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel Season 2 of 'Inside Job.' Over the years, these characters have become real people to me, and I am devastated not to be able to watch them grow up."

She continued in her statement, "Reagan and Brett deserved to get their ending and finally find happiness. And I would have loved to been able to share what was in store with you all. To everyone who watched, thank you for coming along on the ride. Even though I’m sad, it helps to know that there’s people out there who cared just as much about these characters as me."

Hirsch himself later added, "Shion had an awesome ending in store for these characters. I’m so sorry that she won’t get the chance to share it. Grateful to have had the chance to help on one of my best friend's shows, for however briefly."

"Inside Job" was an animated adult comedy about the shadow government of the United States, a dysfunctional team committed to the world's conspiracies. The show revolved around Cognito Inc's anti-social tech genius Reagan Ridley (Lizzy Caplan). In a bizarre workplace, Ridley is the odd person out for believing the world could be a better place and that she can make a difference.

The problem is dealing with her unhinged father, Randall Ridley (Christian Slater), irresponsible coworkers, and her struggle to get the promotion she's dreamed of for years. The cast also features Clark Duke, Andrew Daly, Bobby Lee, John DiMaggio, Tisha Campbell, and Brett Gelman.

This is not the first time Netflix opted to cancel a show that they previously announced had been renewed. The acclaimed Emmy Award-winning series "GLOW" was renewed for a fourth season. However, Netflix later reversed its decision to renew the show, citing the COVID-19 restrictions as the cause of the cancelation.

As reported by Deadline, a Netflix spokesperson also confirmed the show's cancelation. The show initially received a 20-episode order for its first season. It was split into two parts with 10 episodes each. Part 1 debuted in October 2021, with Part 2 debuting in November 2022.

The project was part of Takeuchi's overall deal with Netflix. It's also the first adult animated series that was produced in-house by Netflix Animation Studios. Her previous credits include "Gravity Falls" on Disney XD, "Regular Show" on Cartoon Network, and "Disenchantment" on Netflix. She also worked as a story artist on Pixar's "Monsters University" and "Inside Out."
