For 60 years, the Golden Globeshave been hiring actors’ childrento escort the award winners on stage. Now that Nepo babies are out, that tradition has been axed.
Nepotism Babies Hard Fall
In the past few weeks, a conversation about the privileges of nepo babies has been fired up again,. It’s certainly not the first time the conversation has been taking place but for some reason, this time, it’s sticking.
No reason has been given but we do know that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, otherwise known as all those people who vote for the awards shows is getting an overhaul. The association is hoping to improve diversity, inclusivity, transparency, you know all the things many organizations have been ignoring for decades.
This year, the Globes will be on Jan. 10 and is hosted by Jerrod Carmichael. It has not been revealed how the awards will now be presented or whether anyone will be accompanying the celebs on stage.
Past Golden Globe Babies
Some of the most popular actresses and actors today have had the opportunity to be Golden Globe babies. Melanie Griffith whose mother is Tippi Hedren took on the role in 1975, and her daughter Dakota Johnson did the same in 2006.
In 1986 it was Laura Dern’s turn her dad is Bruce Dern and her mom is Diane Ladd. All of Sylvester Stallone’s daughters got their chance as well in 2017. “Isan Elba, Idris’ daughter had her shot in 2019.
Finally, the last ever ambassadors were Jackson and Satchel Lee, Spike Lee’s twin son and daughter in 2021. There was no Golden Globes ceremony in 2022 therefore, they hold that nepo baby title.
Nepo Babies Are Fighting Back
Many nepo babies are speaking out about the conversation surrounding them and we have to be honest, it may be having the reverse effect that they want. Many followers of the trend tend to hit back harder every time one of the nepos speaks out.
Zoe Kravitz, whose mom is Lisa Bonet chalked it up like this. “It’s completely normal for people to be in the family business. It’s literally where last names came from. You were a blacksmith if your family was, like, the Black family.”
Lily-Rose Depp, Johnny Depp’s daughter didn’t see the relationship between her last name and her career.
“People are going to have preconceived ideas about you or how you got there, and I can definitely say that nothing is going to get you the part except for being right for the part … The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things. Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”
She was quickly humbled when followers of the trend reminded her that she is a 5’2 runway model basically impossible for anyone else that height.
Maya Hawke the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman knows what her position is.
“I feel like the only way to handle the nepotism thing — which definitely gives you massive advantages in this life — is, you will get chances for free, but the chances will not be infinite. So you have to keep working and do a good job. If you do a bad job, the chances will stop. That's my ethos.”
So many other celebs commented on the conversation like Gwyneth Paltrow, Hailey Bieber, Lourdes Leon, The Beckham children, really, it’s endless.
The Golden Globes Have Their Own Drama
The award shows steps to remove nepotism are actually the least of their problems at this moment and comes off as a band-aid to cover the real drama. Before all this nepo talk, it was found out by the L.A. Times that the organization had zero black members on their HFPA board.
They were also accused of unethical conduct. Board members were also told to stop accepting gifts of any kind and, they opened a hotline for board members to be able to report misconduct.
The GG’s are now bragging ahead of the Peacock televised event that they have the most diverse membership of all awards ceremonies and a code of conduct.
We’ll see how this goes.
