George R.R. Martin, the author behind the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," has shared some new details on his personal blog [Titled "Not a Blog"] about plans for planned spinoffs of "Game of Thrones" by HBO. Earlier this year, HBO successfully launched the first spinoff for "Game of Thrones" with "House of the Dragon." The prequel series has already been renewed for a second season.

Martin indicated that work is continuing on some of the planned spinoffs, but others have been shelved, at least temporarily.

After the original "Game of Thrones" series ended its eight-season run in 2019, HBO began developing multiple spinoff projects based on the series and Martin's books. The spinoffs included both live-action and animated projects, including a "Jon Snow" sequel series that would see Kit Harington reprise his role, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Other live-action prequels for "Game of Thrones" that are reportedly in the works include "10,000 Ships" with showrunner Amanda Segel, "9 Voyages" with showrunner Bruno Heller, and "Dunk and Egg" with showrunner Steve Conrad. "Dunk and Egg" would be based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novella series set in the world of "A Song of Ice and Fire," following the adventures of the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguad, Ser Duncan the Tall aka "Dunk," and Aegon V Targaryen, the young boy "Egg" who would become the future King of the realm.

THR has also reported on three animated prequels in the works, one of which is called "The Golden Empire," which would be set in the land of Yi Ti, a land in the world inspired by China. There is also said to be a stage play in the works that is based on Robert's Rebellion.

Speaking on the spinoffs in his blog post, Martin noted that movement has picked up on some, but none of the various spinoffs are yet to receive the Hollywood green light. He wrote, "Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development.  None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping…maybe soon. "

Meanwhile, Martin noted that some of the other spinoffs have been "shelved," but not necessarily off the table forever. He continued on the spinoffs, "A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf."

Martin also revealed all the recent changes at HBO Max have impacted their work on the spinoffs. His comments regarding the changes at HBO Max appear to be about the recent WarnerMedia and Discovery merger, which has seen multiple shows get yanked from the HBO Max streaming service. Also, the planned release for the live-action "Batgirl" movie was canceled, making the film a tax write-off. Other popular shows that were available on HBO Max that previously aired on Adult Swim or Cartoon Network suffered similar fates. But for now, it looks like nothing has been commissioned by HBO beyond the recently announced second season of "House of the Dragon."

As reported by The Blast, the first season finale of "House of the Dragon" that debuted in October drew 9.3 million viewers, drawing bigger numbers than all but two seasons of "Game of Thrones" in total viewers. The show has been a big winner for HBO and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, so it appears to be safe at the moment.

There is also the matter of the next book in the series, "The Winds of Winter." Martin noted that his work on the next "Song of Ice and Fire" book is continuing in his already busy schedule, including the development of a television series based on his sci-fi book series, "Wild Cards," that is currently being worked on for NBCUniversal's Peacock.

As Martin noted in his blog, "Oh, and did I forget WINDS OF WINTER? No, of course, I didn’t. But if I ever did, I know you folks will remind me."

The first season of the "Game of Thrones" spinoff, "House of the Dragon," is currently streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 does not yet have an official launch date.
