When Pokimane hit the scene in 2017, she quickly amassed over 450,000 Twitch followers by playing Fortnite. Within no time flat, she was playing alongside mainstream celebrities, like basketball player Josh Hart, which helped build her following even more. Prior to all the current drama, she had 5.3 million followers and more than 120 million views under her belt.

Throughout that whole time, she never once mentioned having a boyfriend, nor really shared much about her love life at all. And apparently, that’s exactly what many of her followers liked about her most, as they are now dropping like flies upon hearing the news that a boyfriend has come on scene.

Although Pokimane dresses modestly and does not delve into her love life, a rather large portion of her followers fawn over her anyway. Despite her posting a video stating that she would rather keep that part of her life under wraps, they simply assumed she was single and began in earnest trying to win her over. They threw their money her way without hesitation, hoping she will take notice and favor them over the rest.

Their bid for romantic attention has fallen on deaf ears, however, as she simply focuses on building her brand and protecting her content. As she has already stated that boyfriend talk is not a part of her branding, no corrections were thrown their way — until YouTube streamer, Leafy (LeafyIsHere), spoke up, that is.

Perhaps it was to catch up on subs, or just a want to stir up drama in the streaming community, but when Leafy dropped the boyfriend bombshell, everyone’s ears perked up. In a video titled, “Content Nuke – Pokimane,” he shares the news that she not only has a boyfriend but has been keeping him secret for quite a while here. And, despite a lack of evidence to back up his claims, the dreams of Pokimane followers everywhere began to shatter.

Per usual, drama llama Keem added fuel to the fire by posting a dig at her followers, implying they are both foolish and desperate. This notified up to 2.8 million more people, getting the gossip train moving in full force. Response videos started popping up everywhere as a result and disillusioned fans began dropped their subs to Pokimane’s channel in droves. She went from having over 10,000 subscriptions in July to just over 2,000 in August. Bummer.

In an effort to get some of the damage under control, Pokimane made an apology video to soothe her heartbroken fans and explain her stance. She also goes into detail on other sources of contention between her and other streamers in the past.

By the end of the video, it is clear that she has decided to take a lengthy break from streaming to focus on other endeavors and get her mind straight. Even if her subscribers forgive her silence on the whole boyfriend matter, there’s no stream to go back to at this time.

With Pokimane’s undeniable popularity, however, it won’t be long before she pops up again in the eSports world. Until then, she implies that it’s time for exploring new hobbies, getting outside, and disconnecting from social media altogether — and encourages all her fans to do the same.
