Selena Gomez recently got all choked up on a brand new episode of HBO Max’s Selena + Chef . The 28-year-old superstar music artist was in the middle of cooking a roast chicken and bruschetta with chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo when they asked whether Selena minded people’s writings about her.

Surprisingly, the former Disney star actress actually showed quite a bit of emotion when she started discussing how she feels about other people’s criticisms or reviews… apparently when those reviews mention Justin Bieber.

Selena didn’t name anyone specific, but considering her years long dating history with the now-married “Somebody To Love” singer and her very emotional breakup with him, it isn’t hard to put two and two together.

“I guess I’ll just speak on comments in general. No, it does not help me in any way. I think the things that I do read that are helpful for me, are when it comes to my charity work.”

She went on to say that she doesn’t like it when people refer to her as Justin Bieber’s girlfriend.

“The part that frustrates me is when people think of me… do they just think of me as, ‘Oh, that girl who was with that person’ and that’s it?”

Gomez had a relationship with Bieber from 2011 to 2018 (pretty much on and off) and her iconic performances of “Cry Me A River” perfectly demonstrate how devastated she was to break up with him.

“I would be devastated if people think that because I’ve worked so hard to not be that but to be, you know… Sorry, I’m getting emotional.”

Selena told NPR that she has been more open and transparent than ever in recent years because she recognized how the media would portray her public breakups and public image.

“The reason why I've become so vocal about the trials and tribulations of my life is because people were already going to narrate that for me. I wasn't going to have a choice because of how fast everything moves now. And most of the time, yes, it's not true, or it's an embellished version of what the truth is. I want to be able to tell my story the way that I want to tell it.”

Gomez also doesn’t want to appear fake. She would rather be honest about how horrible she feels than hide behind a mask, and that matches perfectly with how she recently appeared in the aforementioned cooking episode.

“And all of these things happened, and I wasn't going to deny that, I wasn't going to pretend to put a smile on when it actually was awful — a few of the worst moments of my life. And I don't know if I would have made it. And that's medical reasons, obviously, and emotional reasons. I just had to find a way to claim my story.”
