In a recent interview with People, Barrymore admitted that going through a divorce was one of the most challenging experiences of her life and that it put her in a bad spot.

The actress and her ex-husband, Will Kopelman, separated in 2016, and she noted that one of the hardest things about it was that there was no scandal or other cause that may have been the reason because "nothing went wrong."

"We tried so hard to make it work. A friend once said to me, 'Divorce is the death of a dream.' That's exactly what it feels like—something so final you can't get it back," the "Batman Forever" actress revealed.

Barrymore, 43, also disclosed that despite being divorced, she had vowed in her heart to raise her children, Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8, as a family.

While telling People about her dark days, the TV host admitted to using alcohol to "numb the pain and feel good."

"It just took me down," she said. "There are times where you can look at someone you think is a strong person and see them so broken and go, 'How the f**k did they get there?' and I was that person. I broke." She also mentioned that alcohol helped her cope with her pain.

Barrymore described how her drinking issues caused her to get lost once more and that she had to deal with it because of her children.

"It was my kids that made me feel like it was game time," she said. The actress also shared that developing "The Drew Barrymore Show" gave her "something to focus on and pour myself into. It gave us something to believe in."

The TV personality is no stranger to the big screen; she first gained notoriety in a puppy food commercial when she was 11 months old. At age 7, she made a cameo in the American science fiction film "The Extra-Terrestrial."

Barrymore stated that in 2019, Elaine Bauer Brooks, senior vice president of development and multiplatform programming at CBS, contacted her and asked if she could record a sales tape.

Barrymore, knowing fully well she was being asked for an audition, proudly displayed her skills and acknowledged that she had given the network a condition, namely that the show couldn't just be about celebrities.

She said, "I don't want to do a show where all I do is talk insider baseball. That isn't the growth I'm looking for. But if you would be willing to do a balance of celebrity and other stories, I would really want to do the show."

The show, which premiered in 2020 amid the pandemic, didn't start off well, according to Barrymore, because her initial approach, which included lots of comedy, wasn't good for daytime tv. It has since been revamped and reformatted and is now the fastest-growing daytime show, per People.

As the little girl lost author gets set to celebrate the golden jubilee of her birth, she is choosing to put herself first in all things.

The actress discussed achieving some of her goals in life as she said, "This has been the best decade of my life, without question. It wasn't just the most awesome, it was the one where I feel like I've slayed more dragons than I ever have in my whole life."

Barrymore added that she had previously perceived happiness as "giddy, enthusiastic optimism" but now believes that life is more complicated than that.

"It is a choice. You have to work for that. It is hard to get to some days. And so when you've harnessed it, that feels like such a better victory." And once you have it? "You hold on tight," she said.
