"Blockbuster" will not be returning for a second season.

The Netflix series, based on the defunct video retail store chain, premiered on the streaming service just over a month ago. The series starred "Fresh Off The Boat" and "Always Be My Maybe" actor Randall Park, and its first season clocked in at only 10 episodes.

The series was not Netflix's first flirtation with Blockbuster-related nostalgia; the documentary, "The Last Blockbuster" was released two years ago.

The world's last remaining Blockbuster video rental store has been turned into an Airbnb. Fans who stay will be able to get unlimited access to the shop's huge range of film titles, and will have a TV and a pull-out couch to watch them on. The 20-year-old store in Bend, Oregon, in the United States, is the last remaining store in the once hugely popular video rental chain. The store rents film titles at $3.99 USD - and a stay is just $4 USD, plus taxes and fees. Store manager Sandi Harding has converted a section of the store for the “End of Summer Sleepover”, which will allow film lovers to access the store for three one-night stays in September. It has been listed on holiday accommodation site, Airbnb for local residents. "This end of summer sleepover will offer movie lovers in Deschutes County, Oregon the chance for a 90s-themed stay to relive the bygone Friday night tradition just as we remember it," they said. "As the Airbnb host, Sandi will stock the shelves with all the movies a heart could desire before handing over the keys." At its peak, Blockbuster had over 9000 stores around the world. In December 2013, the long-running rental chain called in administrators in the UK. Please credit AIRBNB/MEGA. 12 Aug 2020 Pictured: Inside the Airbnb. In a world before cinema devotees were given endless amounts of viewing options, and viewers did not have to get off the couch to acquire the night's entertainment, Blockbuster was king!

The rise of the success of VHS tapes in the eighties lead to the rise of video rental stores; the first Blockbuster store opened in 1985 in Dallas, Texas, by former computer software employee, David Cook. (via Business Insider)

Cook left the company three years later, following Blockbuster's acquisition by "three major investors." $18.5 million was invested into Blockbuster, which by then had expanded to include several additional locations.

The early nineties brought worldwide expansion into Blockbuster. Business Insider reported that over 2,000 stores were opened in the UK by 1992 after Ritz, a video retail chain, had been acquired by the company.

The romance of Blockbuster's rule was suddenly threatened when a new company suddenly appeared on the block!

The CEO of the said company had felt annoyed by Blockbuster's late fees, according to Business Insider, leading to the creation of Netflix! Reed Hastings had acquired a $40 fine in Blockbuster late fees.

Blockbuster also had the chance to purchase the young company at one time during the new millennium! The potential $50 million deal between Blockbuster and Netflix did not go through; the publication revealed Blockbuster had been the party to decline.

Stranger Than Fiction: Inside Netflix's Cancellation Of 'Blockbuster'

The workplace comedy, (think "The Office"), failed to generate the same strong appeal of Blockbuster-related nostalgia.

Viewers in the United States weren't as gung-ho to watch the series as viewers overseas. Viewers in Australia and Canada brought the series into their top ten slots, but the series failed to achieve the same accolade in the States. Deadline reasons that Netflix's comedy series could be at a disadvantage. The publication reports the streaming service "uses hours viewed as a rating metric."

"...Without the necessary editing that airing on a broadcast network would've imposed," critic Caroline Framke writes, "each episode of the Netflix show drags on several minutes too long for its material, dragging out scenes and jokes that would've seemed sharper given a more discerning eye."

Twitter users couldn't resist the opportunity to make jokes and point out the irony of the series' cancellation.

"convinced they created the show so they could kill blockbuster one last time," a fan tweeted in a thread by DiscussingFilm.

"Now Netflix has defeated Blockbuster twice!," a user tweeted.

Other fans tweeted their opinions about the series.

"i tried the series a month ago..." a Netflix viewer also tweeted in the thread. "couldn't get passed halfway through the first episode."

"The show had some good actors but the script was terrible, it's unfortunate it got pulled. It could have been something good if it got time and room to grow over a few seasons," a viewer theorized.

"Should've set it in the early 90's when Blockbuster was at its peak," another user tweeted. "It could've been a good workplace comedy. A 21st century 'Cheers'."

"i remember watching the first episode and instantly got bored," a viewer tweeted. "i'm not rlly surprised tbh. great cast honestly! but such a s*ite script."

Viewers can make a decision about "Blockbuster" for themselves! The series is still available for streaming.
