#FREEBRITNEY: Petition To End Conservatorship Now Warrants White House Response

A petition to free pop superstar Britney Spears of her ongoing legal restraints has reached its goal. The plea, placed on WhiteHouse.gov, asks "the federal government to call on Congress to act on an issue: The conservatorship and civil liberties of Britney Spears."

The petition began on July 9th and hoped to reach 100,000 signatures within 30 days. It hit the mark in only seven days.

Now, as stated on the website, the petition "Needs 0 signatures by August 8, 2020 to get a response from the White House."

Britney's battle began 12 years ago, in 2008.

She'd clearly had a tumultuous 2007. As one outlet put it, "Britney started acting erratically in public."

"She was spotted driving her car with her infant son in her lap, shaved her head, and attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella. In 2008, Britney was put under a 5150 hold in a psychiatric hospital twice for a mental health evaluation."

Early the next year, Britney's dad Jamie Spears placed her under a legal guardianship (or conservatorship).

The petition's success is a source of strength for the #FreeBritney movement, whose supporters anxiously await next week's court hearing.

Though the conservatorship had always been a (big) point of contention, the #FreeBritney movement didn't officially begin until 2019. It was the result of a groundbreaking podcast that brought forth new allegations of corruption within the conservatorship, including Britney's then-recent stay at a mental health facility being against her will.

News of the big victory via petition signatures came on Thursday morning. "We will set her free from this injustice," someone tweeted in response.

Countless messages continued to come in alongside the famed #FreeBritney hashtag:

"We all did it and stepped up for Britney," one wrote. "It makes me happy knowing how many people love and care about her well being."

Another said sentiment? "Keep signing. More signatures, more serious will be taken. Must be the first one they look into in my opinion."

A fellow Spears supporter echoed this thought: "Just because the petition reached 100k signatures does not mean you should stop signing! The more the better."

Despite already being one of the world's biggest stars, Britney Spears lost her rights when she was barely 26 years old.

"With this conservatorship," the petition states, "she is unable to properly fight for her freedom as she isn’t legally allowed to hire her own lawyer. We need this petition so that Britney can hire her own lawyer and live a normal life as a 38 year old woman with two kids.

As the #FreeBritney movement tweeted President Donald Trump: "We are looking forward to your email."
