Academy Award winner, Kate Winslet is fanning over her daughter, Mia Threapleton because the real-life mother-daughter duo will now be seen on screen, in the new Channel 4 drama, "I am Ruth."
Speaking to BBC One's Laura Kuenssberg, Winslet admitted she was blown away by Mia's performance, and was one proud momma, given that her daughter barely needed her help to give her best on the screen. Here's what Winslet had to say, and what we know about Mia Threapleton.
Kate Winslet & Mia Threapleton Star As Mother-Daughter In 'I Am Ruth'
'I am Ruth' is a full-feature movie that will air on Channel 4, and shows Winslet playing mom to her real-life daughter, 22-year-old Mia Threapleton. In the movie, Mia plays a teenager whose mental health begins to unravel as she gets caught up in the pressures of social media.
"I am Ruth" will air on Channel 4 on Thursday, December 8, and comes written by Winslet herself, along with BAFTA awardee Dominic Savage. Mia plays 17-year-old Freya who is shown withdrawing into herself as she gets caught up in a destructive wave of social media.
Given that Winslet has kept her kids away from social media for the longest, she spoke to BBC about the same, saying its "frightening to parents because we don't really know what's there."
She continued to say, "We don't know really what's going on in their friendship groups anymore because so much of it is actually built on phones, inside phones. This world that you can burrow deeper and deeper into it, and becomes darker and trickier and much, much harder for children to navigate. I think because people, young children, are having phones at a much earlier age, they're able to access things that emotionally they're just not equipped or sophisticated enough to know how to process."
Winslet also said the decision to focus on this movie on children's mental health, came after a detailed talk with Savage, where they brainstormed on what parents should do "when they can clearly see there's a problem".
Kate Winslet Claims Working With Daughter Came With A Bonus
If you look at Winslet and Mia, you'd know they were related instantly, but since Mia bore a different last name, she quietly began acting without anyone knowing who she was, to a large extent.
In 2021, Winslet spoke to Lorraine Kelly, saying, "[She's] 20 and acting. She's away now in the Czech Republic about to start on a TV series over there."
When asked if she knew her daughter wanted to act, the 47-year-old star replied, "I think I knew [it] was coming, I always suspected. And then a few years ago she turned around and said, 'I'd like to give it a go.'"
With a different last name, Winslet also said that Threapleton's Hollywood connection slipped under the radar and that she landed her first role on her own. In 2020, she also starred in the movie, "Shadows." Said the "Titanic" star, "What's great for her is she has a different surname so she slipped under the radar and the people who cast her didn't know she was my daughter and that was important for her self-esteem, of course."
Working together was a treat for both, and Winslet said, "...We had the added bonus of knowing how to push each other's buttons, which I can tell you we can do quite well and definitely lent on that resource considerably when we were filming."
Mia Threapleton Blew Mum Away!
According to People, Winslet is super impressed with her daughter, allegedly saying, "Actually, I was just so blown away by her. I mean, she didn't need my help at all."
Winslet continued: "Sometimes I could introduce her to a technical trick here and there. Just little things I picked up along the way, like changing an eye line ... Little things like that, that no one teaches you. And she appreciated that stuff."
That said, when it came to acting it's clear, Mia has her mother's genes and the proud mom admits that her daughter would say, "I'm good," and give it a go on her own. "And there were times when I would say, 'Can I just one...', only to get a 'No, no, no, I'm good,' from her."
In fact, as Winslet admitted to ITV's Lorraine, Mia even asked her to "shut up." Said the mom of three who shares Mia with her first husband, Jim Threapleton, "As far as performance, she didn't need me at all," she said. "There are even moments where she'd look at me and go, 'Shut up Mum, let me do it!'"
Like mother, like daughter, right?
