Universal Pictures and Nintendo dropped the official trailer today for the highly anticipated CG-animated, "The Super Marios Bros. Movie." The official teaser trailer dropped last month, showing some snippets of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, Keegan Michael-Key as Toad, and mostly Jack Black as Bowser.

The latest trailer is now online, showcasing more of the story and more of the voice cast, including the first footage of Anya Taylor-Joy as the voice of Princess Peach and Charlie Day as Luigi [with some actual spoken dialogue at least].

The new trailer offers a greater sense of the film's larger plot. Mario and Luigi look to be New York plumbers who are unwittingly sucked into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom, which is currently under siege by Bowser and his Koopa army.

It appears Mario and Luigi get separated. Luigi is captured by Bowser, while Mario seeks to aid the Mushroom Kingdom's leader, Princess Peach, and help free them from Bowser's oppression. It looks like star Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario is mixing in a lot of the character's trademark catchphrases previously performed by Charles Martinet as the voice of the character, including, "Let's-a-go!" and "Wahoo!"

The trailer footage even features Mario fighting Donkey Kong in a type of gladiatorial coliseum. Also, the film looks like it's even incorporating elements of the "Mario Kart" game series with the characters riding their trademark kart racers on what appears to be Rainbow Road, a track from the games.

Taylor-Joy looks to be voicing a wise and competent leader of her people with Princess Peach, and it appears she starts training Mario to help save their kingdom. It appears an obstacle course Mario runs through during the trailer looks to greatly resemble classic platforms and stages from the original "Super Mario Bros." video game.

Also, yes, there are Yoshis, lots and lots of Yoshis. There are also Fire Flowers, Mario flying in the Tanooki suit from "Super Mario Bros. 3," and many other Easter eggs fans will likely enjoy discovering for weeks. The Donkey Kong fight sequence looks like a type of stage ripped right out of "Super Smash Bros."

"The Super Mario Bros." is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a script by Matthew Fogel. The film stars the voices of Pratt as Mario, Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Day as Luigi, Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Original game Mario voice actor Charles Martinet is also set to voice a character in the film in a mystery role.

While the final quality of the film remains to be seen, it's been generating a ton of buzz online and on social media.

Nintendo game legend, the creator and designer of the original "Super Mario Bros." game, is also a producer on the upcoming animated feature from Nintendo and Illumination. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" opens in theaters on April 7, 2023.
