Kate Gosselin Discusses Son Being Sent To Behavioral Institute: 'I Think It Tore Us Apart'

Kate Gosselin and her children spent over a decade on their own reality TV series and now her son Collin Gosselin is sharing the effects of that.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, the teenager spoke about the negativity the show ultimately had on his relationship with his mom. He also states that it led to an instance where she sent him away to a behavioral institution.

This caused a lot of strife between the two and it certainly put a damper on the parent-child relationship that is still being built during that time. however, he admits that there was a little bit of drama between the two of them before this instance.

“Even before [being] there, I don’t think we had much of a relationship, and I think that just kept tearing it even more down,” he admits.

He also explicitly named “TV and what being in the public eye does to a family.”

The reality show started out as Jon & Kate Plus 8 and eventually transformed into Kate Plus 8 after a nasty breakup between the busy parents and ran from 2007 to 2017. TLC Allowed viewers to watch the kids grow up and experience life but while we were excited to be in their business, it was clear the kids just wanted a normal life.

“I think it tore us apart. It gave us less time to actually be together as a family [and] more time to be in the public eye,” says Collin confirming our assumptions. He also shared that he has no contact with his mom currently and he is fine with that for now.

In 2018, Collin moved in with his dad and sister Hannah and has not spoken to his mom since. He isn’t against a reconciliation though in fact, “It would be ideal,” he admits. “It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have a relationship. I think every son wants to have a relationship with their mom.”

The high schooler admits that while he misses his mom and hopes for a reconciliation someday, he is “doing very well” regardless. He has no plans to “sit around and mourn and cry about”. He sees that his mom has her own life and is living it… without him.

“I came to the conclusion that everybody has their own agenda, you know?” he says. “My mom had her own agenda, and I don’t know exactly what that was. But I was put in a tough spot, and my agenda was to make it out on top of that tough spot.”

Kate didn’t show up to a custody hearing for Collin and he took that as his mom having to resolve her own issues. “It’s on her own terms,” he says assuring viewers that he isn’t “bothered” by her actions.

“If she doesn’t want to show up, she doesn’t have to show up.”

Back in May Jon opened up about his marriage to Kate and why he had such little contact with his kids when they marriage dissolved. “[Kate] alienated me from those kids. I think it was a poor parenting decision,” he told ET.

“[Communicating with] the children that live with Kate is very difficult because I don’t have an open relationship with them,” said the now DJ. He was clearly able to repair the relationship with Collin and Hannah but the other children, only time will tell.
