On Saturday, actress Alyssa Milano posted a picture of her with her family, who were all wearing masks.

Milano was wearing a mask too, but hers appeared to be a crocheted version. That struck many people as odd, since the coronavirus is pretty small, and could easily squeeze through a hole or two in her mask.

She posted the photo with the message: “Show me your masks! Masks keep people safe and healthy. Show me yours! Ready? Go! #WearAMask.”

People on social media had a hard time wrapping their head around Milano's material of choice.

@parkism asked: "Sorry...is Alyssa Milano wearing crocheted mask?"

@minimoogles answered: "This is a wonderful metaphor for her activism. Visible, in your face (literally) but ineffective and defeats its own purpose."

People did suspect that Milano was wearing another mask under that one, but it was difficult to tell.

What wasn't difficult to see were the obvious holes in the fabric, where there should obviously have been coverage. That's the whole point of wearing a mask -- to keep little things like germs out. Crocheted items simply aren't built like that.

But Milano shut everyone down when she replied: "A--holes, mask has a carbon filter in it. So, yes, it might be crochet but totally safe."

She tweeted a picture of the filters she had bought online just in case there were more questions.

Some thought it was no big deal, and reasoned that it wasn't any more or less useful than the simple cotton masks that so many people are using.

Some also said that a lot of masks come with a pocket inside for a filter for extra protection.

@dd9000 said "I've made several. You can create a pocket inside for a filter. Certainly no less useful than the simple cotton masks."

@debraelq added: "I crocheted several masks. What you can't see? There's a pocket for a 2-ply cotton insert that acts as a filter."

@9NEWSNANCY said simply that masks were unnecessary, and cited a quote from Anthony Fauci, an immunologist who is director of the

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and has been since 1984.

@9NEWSNANCY quoted Fauci saying: “There is no reason that anybody should be walking around with masks," and added that Fauci made that statement on March 20.

That was a full two months ago. The pandemic is a constantly changing situation, and that may have been a valid statement on March 20, but not now.

The CDC now says everyone should wear cloth face coverings wherever it's difficult to practice social distancing, so just do that, with whatever material you have on hand -- crochet thread or whatever else you have on hand. Just stay protected.
