In an exclusive with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth shared he would be "taking a break" from acting. This comes after the actor learned while filming the Disney+ docuseries "Limitless" that he was predisposed to having Alzheimer's disease.

"They took all my bloodwork and did a bunch of tests, and the plan was to on-camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that," Hemsworth told the publication, recalling when he was told the news.

However, it was not until he starred in the final episode of the series, which centered on "death and facing your own mortality," that the enormity of the news truly dawned on the actor.

According to a report by the National Institutes of Health, one in four individuals possesses a single copy of the gene APOE4, which is the determining gene that triggers Alzheimer's. Additionally, only 2 to 3% of the population has both.

In Hemsworth's scenario, the bloodwork revealed that his genetic makeup had two copies of the gene, one from his father and the other from his mother, which greatly increases his chance of having the condition later in the future.

While the news was quite overwhelming, the actor said that he and his family—including his parents and brothers—had handled it well.

He shared, "It was confronting initially, but very quickly, it became a self-deprecating sort of joke, if you will. It's just the way I am, my family, there's a sense of humor. And such is life, so…"

Since hearing the news that he was at risk of having Alzheimer's, the actor has become more reflective about the things that should be important. He recommended during the interview that life should be lived with a "big sense of gratitude and love."

He added, "Whatever you do right now to benefit your future self is having a huge benefit in your current self."

On his part, Hemsworth has taken healthy steps to reduce the likelihood of having Alzheimer's in the future, which includes stress management, sleep management, nutrition, movement, and fitness.

Now better prepared for the future, the father of three is thankful for the opportunity to have gotten the Alzheimer's information early enough.

"I feel thankful that I have in my arsenal the sort of tools to best prepare myself and prevent things happening in that way," the actor remarked.

Chris Hemsworth On His Next Roles

Hemsworth did not reveal how long he would be away spending time with his family. However, when he does come back, there will be a lot of changes in the kind of roles he chooses to star in.

He said to Vanity Fair, "If something's going to pull me away from my family and my kids, it's got to be a positive, constructive, collaborative experience."

One possible feature is filming "a smaller, more grounded piece," such as a drama where he does not have to learn a fight choreography or wear a heavy costume.

In the meantime, fans can watch the actor in "Limitless," which premiered on Disney+ on November 16. The actor has also completed filming his role in the action film "Extraction 2," which debuts in 2023.
