Jay Leno is lucky to be alive following a freak car explosion in his famed Burbank garage.

The veteran late-night talk-show host suffered a terrifying accident on Sunday, November 13th.

The Blast reported that Leno was hospitalized after a fire broke out in his Los Angeles home’s garage — which is where he keeps his cars.

The fire erupted after one of Leno’s cars suddenly burst into flames — without any warning.

The star of the popular YouTube channel, “Jay Leno’s Garage,” has previously revealed he owns approximately 181 cars and 160 motorcycles in his Burbank home.

The unexpected explosion happened when Leno was working on a clogged fuel line on his 1907 White Steam Car.

Gasoline got onto Leno’s face and hands, and at the same time a fuel leak and spark occurred igniting an explosion. This caused the comedian to go up into flames.

He suffered “serious” third-degree burns to his face and hands, and it’s so bad he could need a skin graft.

A skin graft is a patch of skin that is removed by surgery from one area of the body and transplanted, or attached, to another area, according to Mount Sinai.

A Skin Graft Could Be Necessary To Repair His Burns

This surgery is usually done while you are under general anesthesia, which means the patient will be asleep and pain-free.

Healthy skin is taken from a place on your body called the donor site. Most people who are having a skin graft have a split-thickness skin graft. This takes the two top layers of skin from the donor site (the epidermis) and the layer under the epidermis (the dermis).

According toTMZ, Leno’s life was saved by his friend Dave who immediately jumped on the comedian and put out the flames.

The burns did not affect his eyes or ears, thankfully.

He was rushed to a nearby burn center via ambulance. Speaking to the outlet, Leno said he expects to be hospitalized for five to ten days.

Luckily, the 72-year-old is in stable condition at Grossman Burn Center after the gasoline fire.

Leno Said He Needs A Week Or Two To Get Back On His Feet!

He echoed this sentiment in a statement to Variety saying, “I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Leno has been photographed in his vintage cars all over Los Angeles.

He launched his YouTube channel, “Jay Leno’s Garage,” in 2014 to show off his expansive and expensive collection of cars.

As we previously reported, over the last few years, Leno has been outspoken about his health, including living with high cholesterol.

So, when the news first broke about Leno canceling an upcoming appearance due to a “serious medical emergency,” many fans were nervous Leno was having a health issue related to his high cholesterol.

Clearly that was not the case, and the situation was much more dire.
