Seth MacFarlane usually adds a comedic element to everything her does. He created three very funny animated shows “Family Guy”, “American Dad”, and “The Cleveland Show” and followed it up with his latest animation show “The Orville”. Now, the comedian is using his platform to call out Oprah Winfrey for encouraging and creating a platform for people like Jenny McCarthy and Dr. Phil McGraw to provide inaccurate information to viewers. He is especially upset now that these are the people who are speaking up on other platforms about COVID-19. MacFarlane feels that they are just not qualified.
Oprah has always praised the likes of Dr. Phil, McCarthy and Dr. Oz for being ground-breaking and inspiring. In fact, she is the reason why Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz are as popular as they are today. Both doctor’s careers skyrocketed after appearing on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. It’s all good and well that Oprah wants to use her platform to open society’s eye’s to new ideas, people, places, and so forth. However, what MacFarlane doesn’t appreciate is allowing them to share ideas that are considered irresponsible by most people.
During an interview on “The Vick Vice Show”, MacFarland called out the media giant on some of the guest she choose to support who are not considered qualified to talk about the current state of our society. “Oprah has spent her career doing a lot of altruistic things — given to a lot of charities, supported a lot of good causes, and in many ways used her platform for good,” he began. “The exception to that is the elevation of these purveyors of pseudoscience. People like Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, all the way back to Jenny McCarthy and the anti-vaxx movement.”
MacFarlane seemed more annoyed with the doctors because in recent interviews they have been sharing their opinions on COVID-19. Dr. Phil has claimed that shutting down cities in this time is a bit of an overreaction seeing as more people a year die from automobile accidents and cigarettes. Dr. Oz was one of the doctors pushing for the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine “If you’re a patient and you get COVID-19, it is worth asking your doctor about any of the products on this list,” said Dr. Oz during one of the many public appearances he has made recently.
MacFarlane has never been one to keep quiet especially when it comes to politics. His shows are politically motivated, and he admits that while they air on a very controversial station, FOX, he has never felt like he has had to bend who he is to keep his show going. MacFarlane felt as though Oprah should take more responsibility for the people she brings onto her show and who she throws her weight behind. While it sounds shady, it’s kind of true. Oprah had a falling out with another one of her popular guests Iyanla Vanzant who has made a pretty impressive yet, a controversial name for herself with the way she helps people “heal”. Maybe it’s time for Oprah to stop co-signing people.
