The legendary voice actor for Batman, Kevin Conroy, has passed away at the age of 66. His friend and Poison Ivy voice actress Diane Pershing shared the sad news on Facebook, revealing that Conroy had been ill for some time. Conroy rose to fame when he voiced Batman in the popular 90s animated series “Batman: The Animated Series.”

Conroy was a regular at the DC convention scene and loved meeting with the press and fans to discuss his numerous DC projects. He recently trended for a story he’d contributed to the DC Pride anthology. Conroy later thanked fans for their appreciation of his story in a social media video, saying that the positive response meant the world to him.

After confirming the voice actor’s passing, ComicBook,com released a statement on his extensive DC career and life. This statement included tributes from several film icons and DC stars who worked with Conroy during his time voicing Batman. The tributes were from Mark Hamill, Paul Dini, and Andrea Romano, and they all highly praised Conroy.

Pershing was the voice actress of the Poison Ivy character and a close friend to Conroy. She recently shared the sad news of his passing in a Facebook post. Her post read, “Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday.” Pershing revealed that Conroy had been “ill for a while” but that he lived a good life.

She wrote per ComicBook.com, “He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans worldwide.” Conroy is famous for his voice-acting role as Batman in the popular 90s animated series “Batman: The Animated Series” and his subsequent voice-acting roles as the Caped Crusader.

Conroy soon became the voice people attached to the Dark Knight, and he subsequently made a live-action appearance as an older Bruce Wayne in The CW crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” Some of his other live-action roles as Batman were in Matlock, Dynasty, and Murphy Brown.

Conroy was also a regular at the DC Convention scene, and he regularly took tie out of his schedule to talk with fans and press at conventions about his many Batman projects. He recently addressed the backlash at his “angry Bruce Wayne” appearance in “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” 

He spoke on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast and said, “The fans were not happy about that. They didn’t like seeing that version of Bruce Wayne. But for me it was fun, it was a lot of fun to sort of stretch my acting chops a little bit.”

He Recently Went Viral For A Story In DC’s Pride Anthology

Conroy recently trended for his story contribution to this year’s DC Pride anthology. The story received such a positive response that Conroy made a video thanking fans for their appreciation of the story, which he posted to his social media. 

In the video, he, “I just wanted to take a second to thank all of you for the reactions that I’ve been getting to the story that I wrote for DC Pride. It’s been overwhelming, and it is so appreciated. You know, whenever you share something that personal, you risk, and you all made that risk so worthwhile because the support and the appreciation has been extraordinary.”

Conroy also thanked the various people at DC who had worked with him, such as Arianna Turturro, J. Bone, Aditya Bikar, and Jessica Chen. He wrote, “They were so supportive and helpful. But again, never underestimate how much I appreciate each and every one of you and what you give me back for my performances. It means the world to me. Take care”

There Have Been Several Touching Tributes To The Late Kevin Conroy

In ComicBook.com’s report on Conroy’s death, they shared several tributes from DC stars like Mark Hamill and executives like Paul Dini and Andrea Romano. Hamill wrote that Conroy “was perfection” and was one of his “favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother.”

Romano wrote, “Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing – he was a dear friend for 30+ years whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries. Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh and pure love of life will be with me forever.”

Dini also wrote, “Kevin brought a light with him everywhere, whether in the recording booth giving it his all, or feeding first responders during 9/11, or making sure every fan who ever waited for him had a moment with their Batman. A hero in every sense of the word. Irreplaceable. Eternal.”
