Don’t get it twisted: rising pop star Madison Beer isn’t just a pretty face. The 21-year-old also uses her big voice for much more than her dark and twisty music.
Originally discovered by Justin Bieber for her soulful YouTube covers, Beer has become the livestream queen while quarantined at her New York home. Speaking of streams – her recent hit ‘Selfish‘ became Spotify’s first solo song to receive 1 million plays in a single day.
Sadly, this success hasn’t totally translated to TikTok.
It turns out boasting 7.7 million TikTok followers and racking up 61.4 million likes isn’t always ideal. Over the weekend, Beer told her large legion that she was DONE.
“this might b my last tik tok for a bit my loves. the energy on this app is draining me 🙁 so much hate and negativity. it’s all I see these days,” she wrote in a since-deleted post.
“i’m not even just speaking about myself. every video [of] ANYONE i see, the comments are all mean. all the time. it breaks my heart.”
The ‘Dear Society’ singer explained that each time she’d see “a girl dance” on her feed, she’d “go to the comments and see people making fun of her body.”
“it hurts me. so much.”
“i just want this app to change and i want people to realize how much their words can impact others,” the second piece said. “i know it won’t. but i can hope.”
“it’s just not okay guys. i loved tik tok and wanna stay in here but… this horrible behavior should’ve never been normalized.”
THEN, things got a little blurry during Beer’s latest live streams – because she did them via TikTok….after leaving TikTok.
“I made a statement saying that I was going to be done with TikTok and I’m going off TikTok, and that’s not necessarily true,” Beer recanted.
“I basically just said that I need to take a break from posting.”
Break or not, she still thinks “TikTok is a super hateful place.”
“I can’t sit by and continue to watch people who are just trying to have fun and make content that’s funny to them, and then be destroyed on the ‘For You’ page. It shouldn’t be a fear to be on the ‘For You’ page,” she said in one session.
On Instagram, The TikTok Shaderoom shared announcement of Beer’s parting from the platform – and a nice number of their 500,000 followers had something to say about it.
“Wow i hope ya’ll are happy, you chased madison beer away,” one wrote.
“look,” another said, “y’all done scared her.”
“[I] stan madison for being a great human being,” a third said, only to return later. “Not only is she gorgeous but is [also] one of the kindest people on the app.”
Yes to all of the above, but this person summarized it best: “What did y’all DO.”
