Creator of 'Sons of Anarcy', Kurt Sutter, Confirms Jax Teller's Choices

Kurt Sutter has taken to Twitter to answer questions from fans about Sons of Anarchy. He talks about Jax Teller's final choice, regarding his sons, and why it took such a long time for him to turn on Gemma (Katey Sagal) and more.

For most of the show, Jax kept a detailed set of journals, where he wrote his thoughts down. He was meaning to give these entries to his children, Abel and Thomas. He wanted them to understand the decisions, the choices, that he had made.

In the final season, he burned them. He informed his ex, Wendy, that he wanted his boys to know nothing about the outlaw life. He settled the debts of his club, and gave up his life.

During the Q&A with Sutter, a fan asked if the decisions in the final season had anything to do with Tara's death in season 6. Sutter said: "Many things factored into that fateful decision," from Tara, to the club, to his father's death and what happened to his mother.

Sutter wrote: “The mayhem had to end with him. He did not want his sons to follow in his path... It’s why he told Wendy to tell his boys that he was a monster. A murderer. He never wanted them to romanticize the life the way he did. He wanted his Abel and Thomas to create a new branch In the Teller family tree. An honest, peaceful branch.”

Mentioning Jax's death, fans have pointed out often enough that his final words were symbolic of Jesus' death in the bible. Jax rode into a semi, with his arms spread wide open, a position that is often interpreted as the cross.

Then the cameras pan, and you see crows eating bread on the side of the road, around a puddle of blood. This is similar to the first shot in season 1.

One fan asked if the series final moments were a biblical reminder, “Reminder? Arms outstretched as the son dies, thorns, bread, blood… If I hit you over the head any harder with Christian symbolism, the Vatican would’ve sued me for copyright infringement.”

And of course, fans have always wondered why Jax stayed loyal to Gemma for so long. The response was simple, and perhaps a little frightening.

“Jax trusted Gemma because, no matter how much chaos she created, she was his f—— mom. And he knew her maternal love was strong and genuine, that’s why he trusted her. That’s why Gemma knew when Jax found out about the betrayal, he could only do one thing. The outlaw thing. In the rose garden.”

Jax learned that his own mother killed his wife, Tara, and he killed her. This put his plan into motion, to get his sons safe, square the club up, and leave for good.

Sutter also teased a bit of information about a possible sequel. “I had this revelation between SoA and Mayans... That the SoA mythology would be four shows. Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C., First Nine and Sam Crow. First Nine would be a limited series. Nine episodes. It would end before we began to tread on history we created in Sons. Sam Crow would be the fate of Wendi, Nero, Abel and Thomas.”

However, Sutter was fired from Disney. Unless Disney relinquishes the rights to SoA, he cannot move it to a new studio.
