Sean Penn just left a piece of himself in Ukraine, much like the maidens of yore who used to tie a favor on their preferred knight’s arm. Okay, so the comparison may be a bit much, but given that Penn went back to Ukraine and gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a bit of himself, with a message of positivity, it kinda fits.

Penn has long shown strong support to Ukraine, to the point of even getting put on the banned list of visitors in Russia. And now, his gesture is both sentimental, as well as inspiring.

This is American actor and film director Sean Penn’s third trip to Ukraine amid the full-scale war, and Zelenskyy yet again uploaded a video clip of the conversation between the two.

In it, Penn can be heard saying, "There are three places in the world that all the pride of my life will be. The place where my daughter was born, the place where my son was born, and this."

Earlier this year, Penn had traveled to Ukraine since he was working on a documentary, about the very political tensions that turned into a full-blown war while he was still in the country. Later, he detailed how he had escaped to safety via Poland, on foot, with many other people.

Penn even said in an interview, that being in Ukraine made him think of taking up arms and fighting the good war, saying, "If you've been in Ukraine [fighting] has to cross your mind. And you kind of think what century is this? Because I was at the gas station in Brentwood the other day and I'm now thinking about taking up arms against Russia. What the f--- is going on?"

Now, Zelenskyy honored him with the Order of Merit, writing in his post, “It was with great pleasure that I presented Sean Penn with the Order of Merit of the III degree. Thank you for such sincere support and significant contribution to the popularization of Ukraine in the world!”

Sean Penn Gave Zelenskyy His Oscar As Good Luck Charm

Penn also made a gesture of his own, this time giving Zelenskyy his Oscar statuette as a “symbol of faith”. In the video posted to Instagram, Penn can be seen handing his Oscar to Zelenskyy during their meeting in the country’s capital, Kyiv. Said the 62-year-old actor, to the 44-year-old political figure, “It's just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you, then I'll feel better and strong enough for the fights. When you win, bring it back to Malibu because I'll feel much better knowing there's a piece of me here."

Given that in the entirety of his Hollywood career, Penn earned two Oscar statuettes for Best Actor in 2004, for “Mystic River” and another in 2009 for “Milk”, we aren’t sure which of the two Penn handed Zelenskyy to keep.

In the caption, Zelenskyy wrote, “This time our meeting was special. Sean brought his Oscar statuette as a symbol of faith in the victory of our country. It will be in Ukraine until the end of the war.”

Instagram Fans Over Both

Sean Penn is in Ukraine, again

Fans could not help but comment on the video, and there seemed to be an equal amount of dotage on both Penn and Zelenskyy.

Wrote one Zelenskyy fan, “How nice it is to watch Zelensky. No "their", dressed up, no script. The door is opened. Come in, communicate, and touch the President of the country by hand (in a friendly way while talking) Just look at the details. They shoot as they want, but not as strictly as some emperor needs... A completely open-minded person! He, Belarusians, and Ukrainians were unlucky with a geographical neighbor. This is the only serious problem...”

Others waited for the movie by Penn, writing, “Sean Penn is filming a movie about Ukraine. It will be very interesting to watch this movie since Sean is personally in Ukraine and witnesses history as it takes place.”

As one IG user also said, “that is very generous of Sean Penn to bring the Oscar statue to Ukraine - beautiful tribute.”
