Alicia Silverstone Body Shamed & Called ‘Fatgirl’ By Paparazzi After Filming ‘Batman’ In 1997

Alicia Silverstone has quite the film catalog under her belt, despite taking some time off from Hollywood back in the 90s/early 2000s. The 40-year-old actress recently opened up with ‘The Guardian’ about some of the notable highs and lows that she has experienced throughout her decades-long career in the biz. Silverstone reflected on certain moments from her career that were difficult, like how she was body-shamed by paparazzi after starring in the ‘Batman’ film opposite George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell.

Silverstone already had notable fame with the cult-classic film ‘Clueless’ which is ultimately what led her to land the role at Batgirl in the Joel Schumacher film ‘Batman.’ The film ended up being the least successful of the ‘Batman’ franchise and was noted as being a total flop. Silverstone even admitted about the film saying, “That definitely wasn’t my favorite filmmaking experience.” The actress went on to say that at just a mere 20-years-old she was the victim of body shaming.

Silverstone shared that she was chased through an airport once by a plethora of paparazzi who all chanted ‘Fatgirl’ at the actress. She even went on to say that a journalist asked her during press for the film what her bra size was! Silverstone explained, “They would make fun of my body when I was younger. It was hurtful but I knew they were wrong. I wasn’t confused. I knew that it was not right to make fun of someone’s body shape, that doesn’t seem like the right thing to be doing to a human.”

It was from these negative experiences at such a young age that Silverstone decided to step out of the limelight. She even said that she “stopped loving acting for a long time.” However, Silverstone has shared that the experiences eventually made her stronger in the long run. The actress explained, “There were working circumstances that were less than favorable in terms of how things went down. And no, I didn’t say ‘f—k you’ and come out like a warrior but I would just walk away and go, OK I know what that is and I’m done, I’m not going near that again.”

Beyond having the difficult experiences surrounding ‘Batman,’ Silverstone was asked by ‘Collider’ in a recent interview if she would be open to playing Batgirl again. Silverstone replied, “I mean, I loved all my scenes with Michael Gough [who played Alfred]. Michael Gough is a dream and I just love that man so much. So, you know, just being with him was incredible and lovely. I’m trying to think what else I’d be proud of. I mean, I like it when I get to do the fighting scenes with Uma Thurman. That’s fun. But I’d like to do it all over again as this woman! … I think it would be much better now.”
