David Bonola Pleads Guilty To Killing Orsolya Gaal, Putting Body In Her Son's Duffel Bag

A New York handyman was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing his former lover and stuffing her body into her son's duffel bag. David Bonola pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter of mom of two Orsolya Gaal, after authorities say he stabbed her more than 50 times, put her in a duffel bag and left it in a park earlier this year. Bonola allegedly claimed to kill his former lover because he believed that she had given him HIV during their affair.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Bonola, 44, was sentenced to 25 years in jail for murdering Gaal, 51, in exchange for his guilty plea. "This heinous killing devastated an entire family, left two boys without a mother, and horrified the surrounding community," Katz said in a statement, according to PEOPLE. "In pleading guilty, the defendant has accepted responsibility and is being held fully accountable for his criminal actions. We express our sincerest condolences to the victim's family and hope that today's plea will allow them to begin to heal."

A heated argument between the two led to the heinous crime in April of this year. Bonola had intermittently worked as a handyman for Gaal and the two ended up having an affair that began two years prior. It was an on-again-off-again affair that eventually led to an argument about ending the relationship. According to PEOPLE, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig told reporters shortly after the murder, "A violent struggle ensues, resulting in our victim being stabbed ruthlessly and brutally in excess of 55 times, causing her demise."

Bonola placed Gaal's body in her son's hockey duffel bag, rolled it nine blocks, and left it on the sidewalk. It was discovered by a man walking his dogs the following morning, and the blood dripped from the bag as Bonola pushed it down the sidewalk left a trail that officers followed back to Gaal's house.

"After disposing of the body, Mr. Bonola fled through Forest Park, where investigators discovered the jacket believed to be worn by him during this vicious crime," Essig said. Investigators later found out that Bonola went to the hospital to be treated for wounds to both hands after the murder. Bonola was eventually brought in for questioning and allegedly "made incriminating statements" about the murder.

Gaal's husband and one of her two sons were away for the weekend. Her other son was home, but it was unclear if he heard anything going on. Her sons are 13 and 17-years-old. According to Essig, Gaal went to a show at Lincoln Center and stopped at an area bar on her way home the night of the murder.

Many have left condolences and loving memories of Gaal on her Facebook page. She updated her profile picture just days before her murder and many friends, family and people following her case have left messages in the comment section of that most recently uploaded photo.

Following Bonola's 25-years sentence, he will undergo five-years post release supervision. His sentencing is scheduled for November 16.
